Jessica, I am very worried about the uptick in religious affiliated hospitals. I live in Kansas, and recently Advent Health (run by 7th day Adventist weirdos) have been buying up local hospitals and TONS of local clinics and urgent care centers in my area , Kansas city. I have a theory that a lot of this has to do with the amendment we passed putting abortion into the state constitution becuase it was only after that that these advent health centers started popping up. They bought one of the largest hospitals last year- Shawnee Mission Health. My OB center was with Shawnee Mission Hospital and it looks like it is now under advent. I am curious to ask them if this has affected their ability to provide contraception and abortion care. Is it possible to look into advent health in kansas and other pro-choice states? THanks!!

We mapped the MAGA Republicans (119 Congressional reps and 26 Senators) pushing to ban abortion pills through the Comstock Act - and which of them is up fro re-election using data from Jezebel.

IMO, we need to start using the term forced-birthers in lieu of anti-choice or anti-abortion. It has a greater and more appropriate connotation of sinister-ness.

I've been using it for years! Jennifer Rubin uses it in her opinion columns at WaPo, it also tells you who is on our side because "prolife"they are not. That was a term their marketing specialists coined, it has never been reality.

Question: When does life begin?

Answer: Life begins when theocrats can destroy women’s autonomy and obliterate their life choices.

Now they’re arguing that they want to legalize IVF, but only if they can place a limit on the number of embryos created.

The illogic and hypocrisy of the position that i’s OK to destroy a few embryos, but not too many, and that it’s OK to destroy embryos as part of the IVF process but not OK to allow abortion is astounding.

I hope Jessica feels better. Grace did a great job as always 👏. I'm very tempted to try screaming into a pillow.

I think part of their strategy is to get everyone to use their language. So that their framing is normalized.

Yes Jessica wrote an article about how the were bullying the press not to call it a 'ban' but a consensus (which is not what consensus means at all).

Why did she use that word in her argument. It makes no sense.

Science needs to be the guide to language, not religion.

"Unborn" needs to be stricken from the language in reference to reproductive rights.

Yes, are we "Pre-dead?" Fucking word quibblers trying to make "fetch" happen...

Why did Paltrow use the word "unborn"? Why didn't she say embryo?

Because they are liars, making up "quack science words.

I'm seeing this post on the AED home page and got the email link, but it's not showing up in Inbox. Don't know if it's just me, but if there is a glitch it might get fewer views than it should. Glad JV is getting a rest and thank you Grace!

This might semi answer. From earlier to a different thread.

Hi Stacey.   Sorta.  Sorry it took so long for me to reply.   I checked,  but I didn't realize that the time frame was expandable.  I really am clueless relative to site navigation.  I finally found my way back after a buttload of attempts.  I found stuff from 17 days ago and assume that I can go back further. I hit an activity tab for my substack profile.   It shows 2 likes and 1 comment(yours) for my last comment.   I see that in the AED post above that I have 1 comment and no likes.  I recently saw substack rolling out new features,  so that might be what's going on here.

BONUS JUST FOR YOU

The Comstock act comes from Anthony Comstock, who was an anti-sex crusader and a CHRONIC MASTERBATOR who called for a ban of obscene materials, including anything aiding abortion. Oliver called it a "Wild Law Pushed FOR BY A DEEPLY WEIRD,  DANGEROUSLY HORNY MAN”.  From The Guardian.

Not sure if this already got addressed in the comments, but the house and senate bills had expiration dates in 2025, but these were removed. I had someone who was at the house that day point this out to me - so an important step forward (though I still don’t trust them…).

I went to an all girls Catholic high school. This is definitely the b.s. they taught us about birth control.

What does it mean when the Republicans are willing and able to police the movements of pregnant women seeking abortions out of state, yet are apparently completely impotent in confronting illegal immigration the same way? In fact, as a political strategy, they are shipping them to other states.

The Comstock Act was passed in 1873 by white men only. This was before women got the right to vote in 1920 by the 19th Amendment. How in the hell can Republicans use the Comstock Act to ban abortion? This is sheer evil. It makes no sense and yet these goddamned right wing "justices" in the Supreme Court may use that to ban the abortion pill Mifepristone. We need to FIGHT against the republican effort to ban contraceptives AND abortions. May the harshest KARMA come to Republicans who are doing this to women and girls in America. Please vote against all republican politicians in all elections for a few years until they KNOW we will not put up with their gd bans. Nothing is as important in November as protecting women's equality with men. And equality means we women decide what is best for our family.

Women won’t have the right to vote for long if they gain full control.

I think you're right, Andra. I'm mad as hell. We need to stand up NOW!

Banning birth control affects men too. They need to understand that. Every dude needs to know what's at stake. They don't want unplanned pregnancies anymore than women. Except the Christian Taliban men....they DO want it.

Margaret Sanger and Katherine McCormick are rolling over in their graves. Terrible lesson we've learned to not have repealed that fuckin Comstock Act in 1960 or 1973. Very shortsighted as a collective.
