Kamala is younger than Biden, with a diverse ethnic background and firmly pro-choice. If I was picking a dream team right now it would be her and Pete Buttigieg.
Idk. I like both of them, but then there aren't many Democrats I really dislike. I think we have to be aware of who the median voters are in the electorate, and try to find candidates who appeal to them, or to shape our candidates to appeal to them. Those voters aren't progressive, and I don't think they're as liberal as I am either. I think they mostly choose Democrats because Republicans are insane, not because they particularly like Democrats.
Yes, I agree with your last sentence, but I think there are untapped minorities that could become influential voting blocks, especially added to the youth vote which is tending toward progressive. I think the Democrats worry too much about losing white middle class voters. If they are supporting Republicans they are already lost causes.
The problem though is white middle class voters have disproportionate power because of where they're located. Turning out new voters is always important; however, while education level tends to determine White voters' choices, that's mostly not true for nonwhite voters. The Republicans see an opening with lower education nonwhite voters if they can get the message right. It will be hard for them to sway much of the Black vote, but they are definitely trying to appeal to Latino voters and some Asian groups with cultural conservatism. There just isn't a liberal / progressive majority in this country; we need the 'moderates'. There's not a conservative majority either but unlike Democrats they have some ability to win with a minority of the vote because of how our system is structured. We usually need more than just a majority of the popular vote to win a governing majority.
Gee, I wonder why Senator Tommy Tuberville isn’t ALL OVER this story, considering his much vaunted concern about the “innocent baybeez” of our military members?
“If Mrs. Petitfrere were a pregnant White woman seeking critical medical attention at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, one must wonder if somebody would have listened to her cries for help,” her claim stated. “If she were a pregnant White woman pleading for assistance, she would not have been accused of seeking to abuse drugs or been asked why she thought it was a good idea to get pregnant in the first place. If Mrs. Petitfrere had been a pregnant White woman who went to the Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune’s emergency room, her son may still be alive today.”
“ Speaking of Republicans trying to confine women to anti-choice states: In response to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall going after women’s right to travel out-of-state for abortion care—and threatening anyone who helps them to do so—Mayday Health used trucks and billboards in Tuscaloosa this week to advertise abortion medication shipped to your door.”
Sorry, Republicans. We are just out of fucks to give about your forced birth laws. You do you, boo. We’ll take care of each other.
I was going to say the same thing. If these churches are going to be involved in politics, they need to start paying taxes. Of course, everyone in the church has the right to speak their opinions. But, when they are speaking for the church and donating to political causes, it's time to get on the tax roll.
Not that there are not plenty of others but here is another example of how illogical, hypocritical, and false Republican actions are in their frenzy to control women and their reproductive rights. Jessica writes: “Idaho’s law criminalizes taking a minor out of the state for abortion care, or even driving them to a post office within the state to pick up abortion medication“. Meanwhile Idaho and other state governments say they p are also so concerned about protecting parents’ rights to control their children’s health and well being. But what happens if the parents are the ones driving their pregnant daughter across the border for an abortion or to the post office? I’m sure there is no free pass for parents.
I understand Jessica's concern about Trump and abortion, but if we can't beat Trump we have bigger problems than just the public's view on abortion. Trump is the leader of a mob that wants to overturn the entire system of government in this country, and sees the 91 indictments filed against him as proof that he is the one most fit to do this. There's really no road back from a Trump victory in November 2024 that doesn't involve massive civil unrest and most likely violence against his opponents. We may experience those things next year anyway.
Republicans may want to impeach Biden as a political to “prove” he is not morally superior to Trump, but I doubt they really want him out of office and replaced by the Vice-President.
I wouldn't disagree. But the Democratic party seems to realize that she polls a bit worse than Biden, at least for now, and so far there's no appetite to run anyone other than Biden.
Yes they can't convict unless they can find a way to argue that two-thirds of the senate doesn't really mean two-thirds of the senate. I would think impeaching Biden, instead of, you know, keeping the government open and averting a shutdown, would hurt the Republicans, but they really really really want to make an equivalence between Biden and Trump and that's what this is about.
The political landscape is pretty scary these days and the Right in the U.S. is unfortunately having a profound influence on the Conservatives in Canada so I really wish the majority of Americans who are not Trump worshiping wannabe autocrats would get their shit togethe before Canada loses its safe haven status. The Conservative and Liberals both used to be centrist but Tories are becoming more and more about social conservatism, I think as a tool to power.. I am sure the American fascists have been doing their best to influence this outcome. Lots of money was flowing north during the truck blockades of Ottawa and border crossings in 2021. Our potential next prime minister was having cosy chats with the truckers at the time.
No doubt. Although from an American point of view, the Tories never get close to a majority nationally, nor in most provinces, but the problem is the opposition is split in a first past the post system. Idk enough about the tensions between the Liberals, NDP, Greens, etc., nor between the Conservatives and the Québec parties, but if worse comes to worst something would have to be done, no?
If there is ever a postcard writing campaign about getting out the voter please let us know. I live in a pro-choice state but would like to help in other areas. I did this for a critical election in Georgia in 2022. It was rewarding to help in a small way.
That 1/3 of Republicans and 2/3 of independents needs to be amplified more in the public media. GOP-friendly media and gatherings consistently and deliberately stonewall dissent on the issue. Still, local and national news services should seek out Republicans and Independents willing to speak publicly on abortion rights. Most media are controlled by progressives and traditional liberals. Their reporters need to reach out to the numerous center-right dissidents on the abortion question when incorporating representative voices. If a future Supreme Court justice is to be nominated by a Republican, a manifested public demand of the need to restore the rights formerly guaranteed under the Roe/Casey precedents across the political spectrum may influence the selection of the nominee, the nominee's own views, and pivotal confirmation votes.

As long as our side is all over it that's what matters!

"The Catholic Church, for example, has given nearly a million dollars to defeat Issue 1" in Ohio? Why in the nine hells are they not paying taxes?

Other than that they think she'd be easier to beat in an election.
But potentially it would give her a year to prove that a woman of colour can and should be President.

I wouldn't disagree. But the Democratic party seems to realize that she polls a bit worse than Biden, at least for now, and so far there's no appetite to run anyone other than Biden.
They would impeach her too. They believe any Democrat in power is illegitimate
But no ammunition and impeachment, as Trump showed, is not eviction from office.

Thanks for helping Georgia! :) A few days ago Jessica Craven posted here about postcard-writing and other actions people could take for Virginia: https://jessica.substack.com/p/abortion-every-day-9823/comments
Thanks. I’ll check this link out.

Thank you for the link to Charley! I hadn't been able to find it.
Jessica, I don't know how you manage this, but it is absolutely essential. Thank you so much for dedicating your time. xo
Thank you! That means a lot, truly ❤️
