I just wrote about the next steps for the Reproductive Freedom Amendment in Virginia. So looking forward to our first female (and Democratic) governor being inaugurated in 12 days!
While The NY Times piece on so-called Crisis pregnancy Centers did correctly identify them as anti-abortion, the Times also said that they offer “free prenatal care.” I pointed out in the comments, and I think in a previous AED column, that CPCs do not offer “free prenatal care” or any other kind of medical care and for the most part, do not have medically trained staff, or only token medical staff. The only thing that CPC staff and genuine medical staff have in common is white coats.
Some good news: the state of Colorado voted for state Medicaid insurance to cover abortion care and it has finally come through all the fiscal negotiations etc and was implemented 1/1/26!
More young women are getting tubal ligation, aka "tubes tied". What a great idea!! These particular women won't have to worry about being forced to give birth.
I wonder how many women and girls cross the southern border to have abortions.
A question I have of parents who send their daughters to red states for college: How can you put your daughter into such danger? What is your reasoning?
I really despise republican politicians. They are such cruel assholes.
Especially since teens often don't confide in their parents when they have an unexpected pregnancy. Take it from me, a pregnancy options/abortion counselor for 30 years. Parents who can't imagine not being confided in if this should occur would be surprised by how often this happens.
I would think teens would be more likely to be in denial for a while before they decided to take action. Did you see "Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always"? It showed a situation in which a teen girl might not want to talk to her mother and not because of abuse, just culture.
I did see that movie and thought it was a terrific depiction. It totally rang true for me. It was also devastating because with quality options counseling ( not the CPC variety she soley had access to,) their trip to NYC could have been so much safer and predictable. As to the reasons teens they feel they can't tak to their parents, so many cite that they don't want to disappoint them.
About the section on abortion care for veterans: I'm a veteran and I receive the VA news reports. The latest says VA is improving access to reproductive care for female vets. What that means is we don't need permission from primary care doctors to visit the GYN clinic Mine would always say yes, so that's meaningless. Collins, the VA secretary, is cancelling abortion care that Biden introduced. We are getting an avalanche of lies.
This country continues to give people who claim the mantle of "religion" full immunity. Unless and until that changes, human progress is not possible. Even AED understates how much this is all fueled by religion. If we don't go after the source we can't change anything.
The "both sidesy" equivocations of our "newspaper of record" are routine. Under the guise of objectivity they sanitize and normalize these radical views, but, notably, only those that arise from wealthy and powerful social factions. You'll never see a left-wing economic opinion given such generous treatment. The Times is wholly supportive of our destructive and unequal social power relationships. (It's why I gave up my subscription.)
They are the paper that published an editorial saying Hitler wasn't so bad, just misunderstood in 1938, and had a reporter in Russia, that whitewashed Stalin when he was carrying out the Holodomor starvation plan, that killed thousands in Ukraine. So they have always been about defending the status quo.
I wonder if they do even more damage, in the long run, by simply displacing the sort of framework that would allow people to understand exactly why they struggle so much in so rich a country. It's their continuous gaslighting, attempting to divest people from their own experiences in life in order to maintain an decayed, grasping elite that makes no meaningful contribution to society, let alone humanity.
That article about the card is fucking unhinged. Yup, Jessica wants to end birth world wide. Absolutely no one but a nihilistic doomsday prepper would want anything of the kind. How could anyone fall for that? I don’t expect that publication to be objective but that was pretty libelous if you ask me. Christmas is too a secular holiday as well as a religious one. Has been for quite a while as proven by all the non church goers, non Christians, and atheists that celebrate. You know and half the traditions we associate with the holiday are directly from pagan celebrations of solstice and the commercial advertising in the 20th century.
What the fuck do they think the Santa Claus thing is ? A religious icon? Damn they are stupid, they steal a holiday from the Pagans, and pretend it only belongs to them, such hubris.
I thought the Times piece on Obria was too “soft focus” and uncritical like all of the NYT coverage of religious conservative misogynists, tradwife influencers, anti-choicers, and pro-natalists. They may throw in a measly quote or two from a feminist or real doctor, but they largely accept conservative framing. They don’t usually cover racists, homophobes, and xenophobes (with the exception of Charlie Kirk after he was murdered) with the same degree deference and benefit of the doubt they confer on misogynists. Bigotry against women is still way too acceptable in mainstream media in a way that other bigotries are not.
👆🎯We are talking about the paper that published the opinion by Ross Douchehat that said "feminism" had ruined the workplace or some such effluent nonsense. They also write articles on trans-persons and mostly quote TERFs instead of an actual medical certified practitioner from a respected outfit.
I would love to have a study that proves God and that we are all born of his likeness. They use god in place of "them" so it sounds more fact based??? They love these studies that get reviewed by peers in the field that proves that they are faulty and use those as fact. I am so tired of their Christian cruelty.

Iowa Doesn’t Have Enough OB-GYNs. The State’s Abortion Ban Might Be Making It Worse.

So —Valentines cards, St Patrick’s Day cards… you can’t make this s**t up. Thank you for all you do, Jessica
Mary Rooke sounds great. And definitely sane.

May I recommend the friendly Atheist substack to you? He is my other, most important Substack besides Jessica's here that I consider a must-read.
I love Single White American Jesus.

They do so much damage, as you so rightly point out.

For me, the season is the reason.
“The right-wing rag accused me of being “demonic” (!!) and of appropriating a wreath from Christians.”
Good thing demons aren’t real just like Santa Claus. Also, I reckon the act of bringing evergreens indoors is a stolen pagan tradition.
Germanic and druidic, IIRC.

The first headline on that Douthat piece was actually “Have Women Ruined the Workplace?” I saw it before they changed it to feminism.
Thank you! I never read his drivel, and was relying on my memory so that I don’t tell the computer I am interested in that nonsense.
wow
