As a woman that’s used mifepristone to manage a miscarriage (aka an abortion) at home and has also had a baby, how is a medicated abortion not vaginal delivery? Like that’s my loophole on that “intervention”, the medication dilates the cervix and causes the body to have contractions that allow the body to “deliver” the material through the “vagina”. If that’s not “vagina delivery” I don’t know what is. But I also have a heart and think this shouldn’t be a conversation in police and ONLY a conversation between me/anyone and their doctor
Maybe if Providence St Joseph’s answers to a “higher power,” said higher power will thwart California’s efforts to enforce its laws—smite the judges or something.
I live in Charleston, South Carolina…what can I do to help besides financially support the institutions fighting this craziness and spreading your incredible reporting? Feeling at such a loss, but also know it’s too much emotionally for me to go to protests at the statehouse. (Too many ignorant white old men…I go into ptsd).
I very much appreciate your work. It would be most helpful if you could suggest ways in which we can be active beyond our local areas. I and others would like to be doing work relative to the horrors you describe going on in other states. Any direction to getting involved in those efforts would be most helpful.
Since we know republican politicians don't care about babies after they're born, why don't republican politicians just pass a law that all baby girls will be killed by the federal government. That way, there is no more abortion at all. oh, wait..
Let's say a fetus has died, some republican states want to force a woman or girl to have a vaginal birth or major surgery c-section instead of a simple procedure to remove the dead fetus . This is basically RAPE BY REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS. I am so goddamned angry.
This may be a totally weird question, but why couldn't women who are being hunted/stalked/shamed etc. start telling everyone WHO participated in getting them pregnant? I never read anything (or very little) about any man being punished or shamed or denied anything. I'm so sick of the woman bearing the burden as if she and she alone can create a pregnancy. If men were held responsible in some way, things might change? Thanks for all the work you do, Jessica. I feel so helpless on how to help or what to do most times. I'm grateful you're fighting (doing so much work) to keep this information out there.
As a former NARAL & PPFA worker (not clinic) and an NON (later NAOP) in the ‘70s & ‘80s; as someone at 25 who had to fight to have a tubal ligation - “what if you change your mind?” which is rarely if ever asked of those “trying to get pregnant.” I’m angry that so very long before me & again, this continues.
The bills to make one who has an abortion punishable by incarceration or death forgets those for whom she may care: children, ill family member & they’d take a mother away for any reason? How does this not enter the debate?
Before these bills pass into law and (deep breath) before Comstock returns, along with all the other horrors (deportation, only 2 genders, firing ppl who went to a mandatory DEIA class under his last WH time, among daily onslaughts) the consequences will multiply and we will lose so many woman.
Constantly amazed at the irony of attempts to neutralize EMTALA so women can suffer and maybe die because they can't get appropriate emergency pregnancy care, when the EMTALA was enacted BECAUSE women were suffering and maybe dying because they couldn't get appropriate emergency pregnancy care.
I personally think Comstock Act is on the horizon as it plays well into the “leave it to the states” narrative if you squint hard enough. They will use that trick until they can’t anymore and move on up to the federal level.
Jessica, could you walk me through how Bondi’s comment invokes the Comstack Law? While it’s bad in itself, I don’t understand why saying she’d work with states that oppose shield laws means Comstock specifically.
I *think it's because Comstock is federal law. Right now, the shield laws in NY are protecting the provider, but if the AG decides to use Comstock they will override state shield laws.
Now that the Supreme Court has pulled the doctrine of originalism (ie, carrying out the intent of the Founders) out of its collective ass, it'll be fun to see how they handle challenges to Trump's new White House Office for Faith. Because it's not like the First Amendment forbids establishment of religion.

I have had this very same thought.

Amy, as a former DV Victim Advocate, I can tell you that many women who are hunted and stalked are often paralyzed with fear.

Yes. That and “pro lifers” create laws knowing full well that they will kill and maim innocent girls and women. How do they live with themselves?
Just read the story about the Illinois county board trying to change the name of their courthouse……… The people opposing it are such wieners, man.

If Louisiana wants to kill women, New York shouldn’t be able to stop them! 🤡

But, in pursuit of the GOP's "heads I win, tails you lose" agenda, Idaho law was held to prevail over EMTALA, which is a federal regulation.
Of course, because God forbid they be halfway consistent about anything except bigotry for once.
