Christ, this is all so bleak.

Thank you, Jessica, for letting us all know that we can call these people what they are, and always have been--liars! And they did it to themselves.

Where is the protest energy for all of this??? I feel like a national ban is mere months away and when it happens people will be mad at first and then just accept it. Losing my mind.

Where is our George Floyd moment?

Expand full comment

My first thought reading that is, did the George Floyd moment even change anything? I'm not sure it didn't end up doing more for the other side by generating a backlash. Which shows how sick the American public is. If we hate women as much as we hate Black people, I don't know what to do anymore :(

The protests showed that people were morally outraged. And rightly so. The other side will use any protest we make against us. Does that mean we shouldn't do it? Still, I do see your point.

Oh we should definitely do it, stand up for what's right and for everyone who's being hurt. It's just that it doesn't give me a lot of hope that it would change anything.

Do you have the bill number the Republicans are pushing in South Carolina to make abortion—and maybe even birth control—punishable by the death penalty? I’d like to share this info with a citation. Thank you for all you do!

How the hell can the Idaho forced-birthers call themselves christians? Jesus never said anything about abortion. and he also advised to take care of each other and help the poor and he never said offer is invalid if the person is a woman. And debating how to avoid giving necessary medical care, because your cult has decided it doesn't like when women have bodily autonomy, should never be considered a sane conclusion. They are ignorant and evil.

There is a lot more to their biblical mythology than Jesus, and it contains abundant justification for their hatred of women. Ignorant and evil is right, and fearful and superstitious as well.

The Idahoans who call themselves Christian actually worship a petty mean deity that they have created IN THEIR OWN IMAGE. If Jesus Christ returned to this planet I guarantee that these people would be lining up to crucify him.

Yes, once they realized he was brown, foreign, and looks rather Palestinian, all bets would be off!

Moderate Protestant religions also don’t believe that “life” begins at conception. Pre-Roe there was a large clerical network made up of Jewish and Protestant clergy who worked to get women and girls safe abortions. My male (almost all were male back then) Presbyterian minister was one of those working in the Network. He didn’t want to bury another parishioner or visit another girl or woman in the hospital from a botched back alley abortion - for a Belief That Was Not What HIS Presbyterian Church taught about when Life began.

The American people need to be reminded of the hundreds thousands of people who died from religious wars, including between Christian faiths-which led the founders of our country to ensure the separation of church and state.

Yes! If the religious people get much more power they will start persecuting each other. My bet is that conservative Catholics and Evangelicals won't stay in their uneasy coalition for long.

Yes, I'm old enough to remember Clergy and Laity Concerned from the late 1960s/early 1970s, and their work on safe and legal abortion. Although I generally have less than no use for religions or clergy, these folks (like Dorothy Day's bunch, Catholic Worker) are an exception. Abortion was mostly thought to be a catholic issue til after Roe, when the segregationists lost the Bob Jones/seg-academy case and were casting around for another emotionally compelling issue with which to bamboozle their flocks. Fascinating history all around.

ZERO coverage of the ninth circuit story yesterday. I couldn't even find it on the ninth circuit page last night. I'm in Idaho and I feel completely powerless.
