Rfk is going to start on the whole banning harmful chemicals from our food thing I thought? Hopefully he can get them to put a stop to the mrna shots too. Considering all the nifty cancers they are calling turbo cancers are bubbling up now. Who would have thought that messing with DNA would cause problems? They've been tinkering with livestock DNA long enough with crispr they should have known it would be a very bad idea. How much have cases of stillbirth and miscarriages gone up since the mrna shot started? I've read studies about it effecting fertility and things of that nature....

I wonder if there's anything we could do to get these anti-abortion fanatics fixated on something else. I mean, when it comes down to it, they just want some issue to give their lives meaning. With all of our brain power, we can come up with some other thing besides our lives to focus their attention on which doesn't hurt us. Right?

The woman from Kentucky is the best. Courageous to the max. I hope she is victorious. Not only for her, but for all of us.

I’m quoting David Leonhardt here: “the demise of Roe has not led to a sharp decline in abortion access…”. I’m sure that would come as news to Abortion funds across this country who are struggling to raise enough money to meet the ballooning need. Also news to the remaining open clinics who struggle to schedule all the patients that contact them, and often have to schedule appointments many days or weeks out. Also news to any woman seeking an abortion, especially those who have had to travel across multiple states and pay astronomical prices for healthcare. Also news to women who have to take extraordinary measures to protect their privacy and/or, to avoid being harassed by the forced births crowd, at clinic entrances or elsewhere. I wonder if Leonhardt would consider it an access problem if he had to travel thousands of miles for an emergency, perhaps life-saving procedure, only to be told, sorry, all our beds are taken and we won’t have a doctor available for you for another couple of weeks. And by the way, this is going to cost you five times more than it would have 2 years ago, and no, your government health insurance does not cover it.

Nightmare blunt rotation 🤣 that's the hardest I've laughed since election night. Thank you!

Thanks for this post. As someone who lived in Gaetz' congressional district and who once talked to him on the phone (he masqueraded as one of his staffer), he talks fluent MAGA and is a greased hog, he will be confirmed to make sure the justice department is brought under Trump's heel.

The Financial Times also had a good mini profile on Hegseth including a run down of his tattoos. He is a christian nationalist. He will affect the reproductive freedom of women military personnel and one to keep an eye on.

I am genuinely perplexed by this. This writer is actually a good guy but even he resists talking about the healthcare crisis that has already unfolded in many red states and will get worse because of Dobbs. Doctors not wanting to practice in red states is not mentioned but this is: "Until recently, at a high level, most large state universities were pretty similar. (Some exceptions obviously apply.) But what if faculty start refusing to go to certain states? What if in order to even study certain subjects you have to choose a blue state?"

RE: the crisis pregnancy centers and the so-called "violation" of their free speech rights (i.e., their right to lie)--isn't there some law under which suit could be brought that claims malpractice, medical malfeasance, or similar on their part? Medical people are not allowed to lie to you about your medical options--that would be malpractice. These people are, in a sense, doling out medical advice. Has anyone explored that angle for suits or defenses? Just wondering whether you know, Jessica. Thank you for all that you do!

Good point. This is like the clinics claiming to "cure" homosexuality. It is one thing to stand up and claim such a thing is possible and propose a path to such a solution. This is free speech. It is another thing altogether to claim to be and act as a licensed professional in making such a claim. Anti-abortion clinics masquerading as clinics providing birth control or abortion services is fraud and if they claim to be licensed professionals, it is worse than that, I'm sure.

And if these are not medical people at all, aren’t there laws against practicing medicine without a license?

It’s so difficult not to be depressed since the disaster of the election. I hope Cottom is right. The new Trump administration will be even more of a clown car than the last. You just know he’ll be continually firing and hiring like last time. And here’s a chuckle for you all - my husband saw this new name for Gaetz - Rapey McForehead. Sigh….not much to laugh at these day.

.”David Leonhardt at The New York Times writes that in part it was because Kamala Harris and Tim Wals “refused…. Reminder this asshole also said that Harris Walz should come out strong against trans people at the beginning to show they were too liberal. Idiot. This pos is a bigot and a Republican in elite journalist clothing. Yeah sure while we’re at it why don’t we abandon women and lgbtq and the working people…. Everything that makes us gd democrats right now, maybe we should start wearing hats they say MAGA to win? Why oh why does he still have a job and why oh why would any reasonable person ever listen to this moron? We’ve been tacking right since the 80s and making it so that people no longer saw a difference between the two parties(nafta, DOMA, safe legal and rare, welfare reform, Obama being against gay marriage and bailing out wall street over main street….) and stopped educating themselves and getting involved because what did it matter? Both parties were the same? Then ooooooh look at this shiny orange “straight talkin” blob, he’s somethin different, let’s give it a shot. Literally the same shit that has preceded every dictatorship/rise of fascism at every fucking point in history. So sure dipshit leonhardt let’s continue on that path because it has worked so well in addition to being morally repugnant

So many election analyzers are speaking word salad. They say things that make no sense. This morning I heard (ON NPR!) Kamala didn't/couldn't identify with working class and thus Dems have lost working class. OK! Does Trump in any way identify with working class? That's insulting to working class people.

We're actually pretty good at it already. I'm one of many people who wouldn't give corporate Democrats the time of day if they weren't running against a party of fascists led by someone who has the trifecta--severe psychopathology, age-related deterioration, and criminality.

She did start out great w economic populism/walz but then she tacked right and started talkin about “most lethal fighting force”, harping on immigration(nice try you’ll never out flank the gop on hateful bullshit) meeting w oligarchs in tech and finance so she looked like a bullshit pol like the rest and the polls tightened. She needed to rail against price gouging corps because, in addition to being correct that they caused 60% of inflation, if you don’t tell people who to blame for inflation they gonna blame you or minorities.

On what Republicans are going to do re banning abortion, here is my prediction. I don't think that Republicans are going to pass any anti-abortion legislation under regular order. The reason is that to do so would require getting rid of the filibuster, and there are enough friends of the filibuster among R senators that this is unlikely to happen. Instead, what Rs will do is rely on laws already on the books (like the Comstock Act). action in regulatory agencies that does not require legislation, or try to include anti-abortion provisions in reconciliation legislation. Reconciliation is going to happen within the first few months of 2025, mostly to pass a tax bill, but it will also have budget provisions. House Rs will almost certainly sneak all kinds of anti-abortion provisions (like defunding Planned Parenthood) into this legislation. But there is no guarantee they will succeed, for two reasons. First, something known as the Byrd rule, which allows the Senate Parliamentarian to rule that some provisions don't belong in a budget bill. Second, Rs are not monolithic, and it may be possible to strip off a few votes by putting pressure on R senators. Remember, Rs had a majority in the first Trump term but they were still unable to repeal the Affordable Care Act. So we need to identify likely senators who might withhold support from these anti-abortion riders that House Rs will almost certainly stick into the bill. It is not too early to start lobbying senators who might stand in the way. A possible list includes: Collins, Murkowski, and the senators from North Carolina, Ohio, and (if he is elected) McCormick of PA. The basic message is simple: no anti-abortion riders on the reconciliation bill. All these senators know that solid majorities in their states support abortion rights, and they are in states that could flip D on the Senate, and so have a concern for re-election. Lobbying House Rs along the same lines (with a focus on those who are in vulnerable districts) also makes sense. Given the slimmness of the R majority in the House, it would just require peeling off a few votes, so this is doable.

The Matt Gaetz appointment resonates with something I've been thinking about Kavanaugh: couldn't they find a conservative judge who never raped anybody? But I'm beginning to think that isn't a bug, it's a feature.

I would like to point out that the USA is going to be a dangerous country for women to live in under the next administration. Everyone should be giving their elected Democratic representatives a lot of support and encouragement. Also, start finding people for 2026 now, and help get them the recognition they need. I would like to point out that Elon Musk bought the presidency for Trump, and we need to have the Democrats have their own social media and TitTok-like platforms. A counter to all the disinformation on the other platforms.

Also, people should be preparing for the Women's March in January.

Yes, the cruelty is the point, as is the hate and contempt for women.

Always remember the role of organized religion in this, as organized religion is premised on the idea that women are BAD, and we all have to suffer because...Eve.

I just finished a truly half-assed article in the Nov.18 issue if thr New Yorker by one Emma Green on thenew playbook for the pro-life movement-hey! They're family friendly( but only if you want to be a conservative one income mom at home with multiple ). They want everyone to get married, have lots of

babies and somehow Trump is going to wave a magic wand and men will be able to

support a family on ONE INCOME.

I am still gobsmacked that The New Yorker printed this drivel

Men should be wondering how they will manage to support a wife at home with many children, on ONE income. I wonder if anyone is pointing this out to them?

I wanted to share what I learned yesterday on MSNBC about Pete Hegseth: He believes Muslims are having too many babies while white women aren’t having enough. He sees the military as “A flaming sword for Christ” (this was a comment by Angelo Carusone on Nicole Wallace’s show). If confirmed, he would get rid of any help for military women who need abortions. In fact, he doesn’t want women in the military (there goes another pathway to a better life for women) and would get rid of anyone who believes in DEI.

All of these evil mfers are supremely unqualified. I am wondering (and I am surprised that nobody has mentioned) if trump has nominated these people for their loyalty and the assurance that they won't pull a 25th amendment against him (as Musk/Thiel crowd will want at some point to install their puppet Vance).
