On the New York Times - I think we should be able to expect that reporters understand the English language. “A minimum national standard” is in fact not a confusing phrase - we have “national standards” in a multitude of issue areas and that means FEDERAL LAWS that all states must obey regardless of their own “views.” A FEDERAL LAW on when you can have an abortion is a ban - the only question is WHEN Republicans/Vance would seek to ban it and Jessica and others have aptly and loudly pointed out that Republicans are using the made up term “late term abortion” to hide their true goals. So yes Republicans are muddying the waters on language to deceive voters but the phrase “national minimum standard” is only deceptive if you have no real understanding of how a federalist system works… which we should be able to expect from NYT reporters or any reporter except perhaps one on a middle school newspaper club.

Also linked on the State Court Report: the ACLU Michigan and YWCA Kalamazoo sued to challenge Michigan's denial of Medicaid coverage of abortions. The plaintiffs pointed to Michigan's new constitutional protection of reproductive freedom. 77% of YWCA Kalamazoo's patients have low enough income to qualify for Medicaid. The suit says that the law discriminates on the basis of sex and discriminates between childbirth and abortion. ACLU Michigan challenges the two-tiered system which often provides insurance funding of abortion for more affluent people, while forcing Medicaid beneficiaries, who by definition have limited funds, to pay out of pocket for abortion. Democrats in Michigan have a56-54 majority, but couldn't get enough votes to eliminate the 24-hour waiting period for an abortion or authorize Medicaid funding for abortions. Kyle Davidson's article "Abortion Rights Groups File Suit to Overturn Ban on Taxpayer-Funded Abortions," https://michiganadvance.com/briefs/abrotion-rights-groups-file-suit-to-overturn-ban-on-taxpayer-funded-abortions (July 1, 2024) points out that all 110 members of the state house of representatives are up for reelection in November. The complaint in YWCA of Kalamazoo v. State of Michigan, No. 24-000093-MM was filed June 27, 2024, and is available at https://live-aclu-michigan.pantheonsite.io/sites/default/files/_field_documents/2024-06-27_complaints_with_case_number_pdf.

Tip of the hat to the Brennan Center's State Court Report (https://statecourtreport.org.

Unsurprising but still rotten: the Jefferson Circuit Court of Kentucky granted summary judgment for the defendants in Sobel v. Cameron, No. 22-CI-5189 (June 28, 2024), a challenge by three Jewish women to the Kentucky near-total ban. The plaintiffs alleged that the state statute's limited exceptions re complicated pregnancies and lethal fetal abnormalities, and ambiguity about how unused IVF embryos will be treated, violated their religious duty to "be fertile and multiply" and the state's protection for freedom of religion. The court said the plaintiffs did not have standing because they were not currently pregnant or having IVF. The plaintiffs unsuccessfully argued that the state law violates the state constitution's ban on unintelligible laws, its prohibition of sectarian preferences, and the Kentucky Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Not rotten: the Kansas Supreme Court held (Hodes & Nauser v. Kobach, Hodes & Nauser v. Stanek, Nos. 124,130/125,051 (Kan. 2024) held that Kansas' stringent restrictions on Dilation & Evacuation, a method used in second-trimester abortions, violated the state constitution's grant of personal autonomy. The court also struck down Kansas' stricter licensing requirements for abortion providers than for other doctors.

Iowa’s 6 week ban absolutely will negatively affect attendance at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The state teaching/research hospital in Iowa City. As Jessica has noted many times before: students do not want to study in states that want to force them into pregnancy.

OMG. the "We want more babies" interview is THE BEST. I make political ads for a living and need to make something with this. I have to see if I can dig up more of her amazing commentary (though for sure by now she's become more savvy?!!)

Also - so grateful that you are calling out the GOP BS to the media. Why does anyone believe anything they say?

Thank you, Jessica. They can't escape your reporting.

Please watch this and share! Maddow at her best and has receipts for the talented Mr. Vance saying he is for a national abortion ban. I am glad she used the VF article from 2022 (I linked to it in the previous thread, it is truly bananas). This guy is as unfit for the presidency as trump if not more. #VoteBlue no matter what, disregard all the gossip/fear about Biden going on in the media and elsewhere.

Also, I didn't know he was such a failure in all the jobs he was installed at by Thiel, LOL. A perfect white male MAGA specimen if there is one. And, let's make him a failure in this latest venture of his (and Thiel's). I feel sorry for his wife -- she deserved better.

Yes, Vance (which is not even his birth name, but his mother's maiden name) has changed his name multiple times. It reeks of someone trying to escape his past. A con man, as slippery as they come, and also I think the "Tiger Mom" advisor who pushed his (now) wife into dating him, actually ghost-wrote his book. (she's an author) And that is why he never "wrote" another one.

I knew about his name changes, apparently twice like you say, Bowman and something else and when they got married in 2014, both changed it to his gun toting grandma's name, LOL. Is there a link and more to what you said about the tiger mom connection? His marrying an Indian American does not fit into the exploitative and the con factor but he also perhaps never expected to go beyond that book/movie into politics. But there is a tokenism aspect to inter-racial marriages on the Republican side. I never thought he wrote his book on his own. He is the present day "the talented Mr. Ripley." Hope his connection to Peter Thiel mafia gets into the mainstream awareness.

Real talk, is it time to cancel my scrip to the NYT? I'm so disappointed in how they're handling this election but I do know that journalism and journalists in general are under attack and I try to keep as many subscriptions as I reasonably can manage. So my question, such as it is, is for the journos, does canceling the subscription accomplish anything meaningful besides sparing me extra outrage or does it actually hurt the real live journalists that work there that aren't the ghoulish Editorial Board?

Past time, why be a party to authoritarians, who want to hurt our president, who is doing a good job. Remember they cost us Hillary with the hundreds of stories of "But her emails" and helped lie us in to "W"s wars.

Earl Stephens a journalist who ran the "Stars and Stripes" says it best:

Clearly this once-serious newspaper has an agenda, and it has nothing to do with protecting our Democracy, or informing their readers about the extreme danger we find ourselves in. Their top editor, Joe Kahn, said as much in May:

“Our job to cover the full range of issues that people have. At the moment, democracy is one of them. But it’s not the top one — immigration happens to be the top [of polls], and the economy and inflation is the second. Should we stop covering those things because they’re favorable to Trump and minimize them?”

That is an astonishing admission, and among a host of reasons the newspaper is not worth the paper it is printed on. For the past year, I have written pretty extensively about how they have abandoned anything resembling journalism here and here.

Lucien Truscott says it well.

Politico even says it in a bitchy "both sides" way, because they are a republican publication:

Hadley Duval is extraordinary…allowing her story to go national is an act of incredible bravery. She deserves all of our support in light of the predictable social media attacks she will endure.

Terrific job Jessica holding the NYT’s feet to the fire!
