Yesterday, I started binge-watching "Apple Cider Vinegar" on Netflix. In episode 3 or 4 (out of 6), the main character's fetus dies at 24 weeks. She's understandably devastated. BUT! In the show, the doctor ONLY offers her LABOR OR C-SECTION! WTAF?????? Now, this is set in Australia; I don't know the ins and outs of Australian abortion laws (I need to look that up). I just thought it was an odd development given the times we're living in. Help me out if I'm severely off the mark in my outrage.
IMO you are not off the mark. She should have been offered an abortion.
I’m outraged too. WTF would you make a woman suffer through perhaps hours of painful labor, or go through a major abdominal surgery & the weeks of post-op recovery for a dead fetus?
That’s another example of; the cruelty is the point, the woman must suffer.
Please enjoy some much deserved rest on the beach - your amazing and tireless reporting on abortion is giving us hope and much needed accurate information. Thank you!!
Republican politicians today are just like the puritans who drowned or burned women alive. trump's next step will be to jail anyone who has an abortion. Maybe the next step will be torture. We must stand up together against republicans ' war against women.
It really does all stem from the Puritans. It is ingrained in American culture to this day. I am keeping hope that this horrific time period we are witnessing and experiencing is their last hurrah death march into obscurity. Majority of folks don’t buy it and we should remember that. Power in numbers is their only strength. Otherwise, they don’t have a leg to stand on.
One thing, among many, that worries me is that these people who are trying to make abortion murder and punishable for women who have them by the death penalty clearly have no guard rails. There is no statute of limitations on murder. What’s to stop them from going after women who aborted should they pass the law? It’s something that should be mentioned. I don’t believe that they would not indict retroactively. They are just like witch hunters.
I am so angry and so sad for the eomyn who have been forced to carry nonviable pregnancies to term, and to deliver a dead or dying infant. I cannot begin to imagine how devastating that is.
Yes, that happened to my mom--in January 1951. She never got over the trauma. When she died in 2009, she was still mourning that lost baby, my oldest brother. It did *not* help, at the time, that she gave birth in a catholic hospital and that the only help my dad was offered (mom was still unconscious) was baby clothes. No emotional support, not even medical advice. Just baby clothes and the address of the catholic cemetery. Years later, I had to get my dad very tipsy in order to get just this little bit of information out of him. Mom remembered nothing.
I'm having a really hard time reading, well, anything. The proper response of a legitimate journalist to the statement "everybody knows it's the Gulf of America" is to stand up and say "are you out of what's left of your fucking mind" and leave the room never to return until sanity is restored. But that's not what happened. Nary a peep about it from the assembled "journalists" present. WTAF.
My only guess is that they are petrified of him. How about how they let Musk get away with the crap about the federal workers being unelected ! Like we are going to hold elections for thousands of workers? And HE'S UNELECTED! They said nothing!
Is it any wonder these people are happy to kill the USAID program? They've been doing it within the U.S. against women for years now. Their cruelty is unbound.
Exactly but the difference is that in forcing women to carry non viable pregnancies and then give birth to soon to be dead newborns, they’ve now made two people suffer instead of one, and further increased the chance that both would die.
Correct, there is no acknowledgment of the unnecessary suffering of either. They enjoy the suffering part greatly and have never cared about actual living breathing life.
I am not religious, but read this quote from a paster and it resonated with me:
“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.
I reacted to that too. They don't care what our bodies go through, or our minds, or our emotions. The horrific cruelty of making a woman give birth in those circumstances. It's out of a horror show. It's unconscionable. Fanatical.

May your beach time restore and refresh you, Jessica -- we'll be here when you return.

They do not have the numbers, they have the money of very rich, hate-filled mostly white men.
I was referring to the very motivated evangelical and other antiabortion religious vote in numbers which helped make this possible
Have a wonderful rest, Jessica. Thank you for keeping us informed and sane.

Omg, you’re right!! This definitely needs to be something that’s brought to the foreground in people’s minds as these laws are pushed.
Every newsletter, every comment I read, I just get more & more angry. 😡
Jessica, enjoy a very well deserved vacation. Hugs

These people HATE women.

I’m really trying to wrap my head around the AAPLOG statement saying the infants who died “would have been killed in induced abortions anyway.”
If anyone doesn’t see that as dehumanizing women I don’t know anymore.
Thanks as always for keeping us posted and enjoy the sun ✨

There isn't anyone I can think of who deserves real vacation time at the beach more than you do, Jessica. Enjoy!
