Thanks for posting the link to donate abortion ballot measure. I donated and will be passing it on! I remember when the Georgia 6 week ban decision was made by the courts in the am and was enforced by that fucking afternoon. The cruelty never stops astounding me!

Trump making a statement next week.... Right. Sure he will. Right after that press conference on Melania's visa....

Speaking of Melania...

Marla Maples was born in the US.

Ivana Trump was born in the Czech Republic.

Melania Trump was born in Slovenia.

Two out of Donald Trump’s three wives were immigrants to the US.

What conclusion can we draw from this?

Immigrants were needed to do jobs that most Americans wouldn’t do.

If the job includes marrying and fornicating w/DJT...count me out...bigly. At 70, I doubt he thinks I'm "his type" anyway, and he sure AF isn't my type either!

Not only have Republicans in FLA pushed this 6 week abortion ban, but at the same time have allowed almost a half a million children be removed from Medicaid. Similarly, 20% of Florida women have no health care coverage and Florida continues to pass on expanded Medicaid coverage. This combination of forced pregnancies with substandard healthcare for both mothers and children, is unpardonable and should be called what it is: Florida's Republican war against mothers and children.

My heart is broken for Florida, a state I love and went to college in where republicans have successfully destroyed human rights (and environmental ones). You spoke at my college in 2012, Jessica and were so inspiring and I’ve been a fan ever since. Women deserve so much better and thank you for pointing out that it’s not just a political moment, it’s a painful human rights nightmare.

Thank you for focusing on the human toll and misery this will cause, beyond the political implications. I’m too old to be pregnant but not too old to remember how frightening pregnancy can be, even with good doctors and healthcare. What I want to know is: what is considered private? What do privacy protections protect if not these most fundamental personal decisions?

From Jezebel today.

Jezebel reviewed prescribing information for multiple drugs and contacted popular telemedicine services about how they advise clients prescribed medications like Ozempic—known as glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, or GLP-1s. The warnings about interactions with other oral medications are there, but they’re not as obvious as they should be considering that some of the states with the highest rate of GLP-1 prescriptions are also states with abortion bans.

The political situation is only the very barest of silver linings, absolutely not worth the ruined lives this will cause. It puts Florida *in play* but only barely, the outcomes are far from guaranteed. I'm expecting a large amount of split ticket voting. I just really feel like Republicans should be held accountable with election losses.

Yes, they have gerrymandered the shit out of us, and when we pass something they don't like, like the felon voting rights restoration, they just put hurdles in the way and raise the % needed to get something voted on.

Yeah and I have to wonder how bad the demographic shift has been since even 2020. Quite a lot of people have had to literally flee the state since.

Yes and it was such an eclectric, wonderful, group of people in that school. And they were very highly rated on the number of graduates that went on to get high-paying career jobs as a result. Not anymore though, they gave away jock scholarships and are stealing land to build a *shudder* stadium... like for sports!

The Florida Supreme Court also approved a ballot measure to legalize recreational cannabis.  Was this because of because of the goodness in their hearts?  Was this to give some an alternative to meth, which is rampant in the state?  Is there a much much more sinister reason?  Is it to be able to target and arrest women for chemical endangerment, regardless of if they are even pregnant?  I wouldn't put it past them.

Thanks for the in depth treatment of the abortion ban in Florida. I wonder how many buses and planes the gov will provide for folks who could use a trip to Massachusetts? I bet none. For shame Gov. DeSantis, for shame!

I wonder if Florida's Republican legislators understand that having the amendment voted on in the GE will bring TONS of women to the polls? Especially after watching the same agonizing stories we saw coming out of Texas, but now coming from Florida? For the next 6 months.

Have they not been paying attention to the abortion votes we've seen the last 2 years??

It annoys me to no end that they call it a six week ban as if there’s any time in there to do anything. It’s a total ban. I don’t even want to know the number of tension headaches we all are going to have come November.

David Sea's avatar

Exactly. Why SIX weeks? Does it make a difference if it were less? Why not a week? I would think the pro-life coalition would want zero weeks. Who do they think they're fooling??
