Speaking of mifepristone and Democrats introducing abortion protections, the Stop Comstock Act (S.951) has 28 co-sponsors (including Fetterman, who is not always a reliable Democratic vote) and H.R. 2029 has 146 cosponsors. That is an unusually high number of co-sponsors for a piece of legislation. This bill would repeal provisions of the Comstock Act which prohibit mailing abortion pills (that is what the statute literally says, although courts have interpreted it narrowly, but we definitely can't count on the Supreme Court upholding the narrow interpretation). To make this an issue for the mid-terms, what is needed is a discharge petition. In the past, discharge petitions have been rare, but Democrats have successfully used them in the past year. Allowing abortion pills to be mailed is hugely popular, and a number of Republicans would be very uncomfortable voting against such a bill. If people have energy, check if your member of congress or Senator is a cosponsor, and bug them to cosponsor and support a discharge petition. This is actually something that could pass Congress (like the Epstein files legislation). It is a pretty simple law so it wouldn't take up much legislative time and effort. Trump could veto it of course, but that would also put Republicans in an uncomfortable spot.
"I’m curious if any readers in Nevada have seen the kind of anti-abortion attacks or trickery that we’ve witnessed in other states considering pro-choice ballot measures"
Not so much yet, though there is a billboard up in Reno that says something about a heart existing at three weeks, so they're still pushing that line.
And I'm not sure how much of a campaign the no side will mount. The MAGA governor here is trying to ride anti-trans sentiment, not anti-abortionism, to get re-elected. And Question 6 passed easily, even as the Silver State went for Trump (grr), so while we're not taking anything for granted things are looking good so far. I'll let you know if that changes.
I think Dear Leader knows he needs to rally up the base (Christo-fascists) right before the midterms whether the report in September is real or imagined.
If these people are serious about prosecuting abortion as murder, then where does that orient them around real murder where people are actually murdering other people outside of some woman's uterus? Suddenly, blood stained death and violence must take on a whole new perspective for them.
Why does mifepristone represent only 30% of abortions? Shouldn't it be representing far more than that?
On the piece at Ms. magazine about double-dosing mifepristone, doesn't this shed more light on how abortifacients and hormonal birth control work? It seems to me I have heard that hormonal birth control can be applied in the same way.
Go look for consistency in religion. Anyone can cherry pick a bible or preach things that aren’t there to their congregation. Many anti-abortion folks support the death penalty and/or cheer on wars in foreign lands. Throughout American history, Christian theology, biblical interpretations, and religious rhetoric were frequently used by proponents to justify Manifest Destiny, Jim Crow laws, and chattel slavery. Never mind the Crusades.
I like the positive thinking about the FDA Study. If they somehow find a way to deem Mifepristone "unsafe," it'll be interesting to see how in the world they do it. Perhaps they know that the level of lying required to "scientifically" justify this attack just isn't worth it. They may have to rely on ideological justifications.
Or maybe, since felon tRump has been given permission by the Maga 6 justices's Slaughter decision, felon tRump will fire the FDA commissioner and replace him with a misogynist, Maga right wing, RFK type quack, to make sure women cannot access this proven safe abortion drug. The more they can keep women slaves the more they like it.
