Listen to the new audio of Vance agreeing that postmenopausal women's role should be to take care of grandchildren... this guy is weird WEIRD (and nauseating) as fuck! He lauds his wife's mother taking care of his children. Yeah, and agrees that it is an advantage of marrying an Indian woman. Indian families do that (my mom took care of her grandchild while the DIL worked but why should others have to?). He has an obnoxiously perverted view of women and their role in society. What if I don't want to be that grandmother or that auntie or that anything he pictures as my role? Who the fuck is he? It worked for his family, great! But there is no policy there to help others who don't have the same 'advantages' he has. This man should never get anywhere near the WH!!! He is dumber than trump which is shocking.

Vance's mother-in-law is a professor of Biology. So Vance is saying the unpaid work of child care is what a highly educated and talented post-menopausal woman should actually be doing. My suspicion after hearing this interview is that Vance was jealous and a little undone by his wife's SCOTUS clerkship at the time. You don't make a country great by squashing and denigrating the talents of half the populace. Especially when the self-appointed leaders are such transparent and dangerous fools.

Yes, I am aware that his MIL is an accomplished person in her own right and I fault her for giving up her power (but that is what Indian families do and perhaps most immigrants do who may not like trusting their children with strangers). My beef with him is that there is no policy framework there to help people with no grandmothers or other family members to pitch in. Whatever advantages he got marrying into this Indian family is irrelevant but of course, it shows his stupidity and his view of women. If he wants his white or other families to be like the Indian family he married into, how is he going to legislate that or who the hell is he to legislate that? He is stupid enough to think he is saying something worthwhile while bashing liberals.

My reason for adding the detail about the professional accomplishments of the MIL was not to fault her in any way, but to emphasize that to Vance they counted for nothing, given her gender. My hope is that she had the option to return to her professional position after taking time to help her daughter and grandchild. Regarding Vance's family policy, it seems to consist entirely of replacing our frayed social safety net with the unpaid labor of women.

Agree and I understand that she went on sabbatical, works for UCSD. I think he is pretty damaged and has perverted views on women and families and what the role of the government is.

Want to have fun with the conservatives? I just keep telling them every time somebody calls him Tampon Tim, another woman decides to vote Harris-Walz . . . maybe even their republican mothers, sisters, aunties, wives, girlfriends. It shuts them up every time.

I deeply miss hearing your voice. I could listen while I did chores. Now, with only text, I skip more and compare when I could listen.

Both my son and daughter were on high school swim teams. When there was a swim meet, the guest team used the locker rooms of the opposite sex, so having menstrual products available in boys’ locker rooms makes perfect sense. Besides, putting menstrual products in boys’ bathrooms is NOT mandated. If a mother keeps her tampons in a shared bathroom, will that traumatize the children who use it? These people need to grow up and understand that children can handle learning about anatomy and physiology without becoming sexualized.

I’ll be fundraising for Yellowhammer during the debate. So far, between the R primary debates & the trump/biden debate, I’ve raised over 950$ for abortion funds.

As far as the Tampon Tim reaction, I would have given anything for free period products in school. I grew up in terrible abuse. The adults around me made clear over & over they couldn’t be trusted. When I started menstruating, I kept it secret. It took my mom over 3 years to get a clue.

As others have said, Tampon Tim stops all red waves.

Regarding the tampons issue.

Can't we all agree that putting tampon dispensers in boys restrooms makes no sense? Should the response to the suggestion that somebody might put tampon dispensers in boys restrooms be "First of all, that would be fine! Who fucking cares?"

Furthermore, why the language "must be available to all menstruating students" as if this could be anyone besides a female student? Nobody here needs to be reminded that there is still a political front among the democrats who insist that reproductive rights only incidentally has anything to do with heterosexuality. Certainly for the antiabortionists, even saying the word "tampon" incites fertility awareness and all its implications as to what it should mean to an adolescent, male or female. This, a place they don't want to be and so therefore any excuse to say that word advances reproductive rights.

But lets not be too delicate when the opposition makes accusations that might have some substance somewhere, however successfully memory holed.

It makes perfect sense if you want boys to internalize the idea that vulvas, vaginas, and periods are normal things that happen to half of everyone.

And that half uses the girl's restroom. Perhaps some sort of tour of the restrooms could be arranged across the sexual division to see the difference. "See? Urinals in the boys restroom. Tampon dispensers in the girl's restroom."

For the rest, basic sex education and an understanding of the attraction across the sexes should suffice.

It would be amusing if it weren’t true. Heartbeat bills legitimize abortion as birth control. How long will it take for the forced birth fascists to make the claim? Ten, nine, eight…

Expand full comment

I'm not exactly sure of your meaning here, but I'll step in anyway.

Most abortions are elective abortions. They occur because birth control either was not in play or failed. Abortion is birth control. Birth control should include abortion as a strategy, just not the preferred strategy. If you get pregnant accidentally, you should get an abortion, just as you should figure out why you got pregnant accidentally to better advance your strategies for avoiding pregnancy.

Thank you for responding and doing so respectfully. Clearly I wasn’t making my point. If I am remembering it correctly, the anti- abortion crowd denigrated abortion seekers as using ‘abortion as birth control’ meaning they didn’t bother to use birth control. Perhaps that framing isn’t being used now.

The use of abortion as birth control is demonized by anti-choice.

As for heartbeat bills, I need someone anti-choice to explain to me the outcome for the infant or toddler born with fetus in fetu.

A while back I read something in the mass media (wish I had bookmarked it, sorry) that attributed increasing life expectancy in the 20th century to three events. They were immunizations, refrigeration (ie food safety) and legalized abortion. Pretty amazing. While the developed world is moving toward increasing life expectancy, the US is not

There is a reason middle class and upper middle class women in days of yore always only ever seemed to have two or maybe three children, and it's absolutely not because their husbands were any more cooperative than the husbands of lower middle class and poor women.

Thank you Jessica. I’m glad you’re taking time to do what you need. The more juvenile the GOP gets that tells me they are struggling. Good! I am encouraged by stories of states that have ballot initiatives. Here in Texas we can’t do that without the state voting on our ability to do so. So we have to vote those jackasses out of office. My focus is get rid of Cruz and vote blue up and down the ballot. November 2026 we must get rid of Abbott. Now he wants hospitals to track illegal immigrants medical records. This place is infuriating. This Nutmeg(er) [I’m from Connecticut] is pissed off in many areas.

That Republican politicians make fun of tampons being available is just SO goddamned juvenile. These men are like 8th grade boys who make fun of girls' periods. Republican politicians would rather a girl who doesn't have enough money to buy tampons bleed out in class. I despise republicans politicians. Evil is what it is.
