The Louisiana thing just made me burst into tears at my desk.

This is what I was literally begging people to consider would happen in 2016. And I was told I was overreacting.

Expand full comment

The same people that denied it would happen are oblivious to how many children get molested and can, and do, get pregnant. They need a wake-up call.

Joe Biden is going to be enshrined in history as the most consequential President in history.

His selection of Kamala Harris to be his Vice President is finally gaining traction as they utilize her myriad qualities, and her husband - the First Second Gentleman - is part of that equation.

Delighted we are not pretending reproductive health is "only" a women's issue.

I won't list all the ways Harris and Emhoff fill multiple assets,

but I certainly acknowledge it.

This point in history is the crucible.

May the USA come through the fire distilled into a union even more precious and valuable.

The interview on the posted podcast is definitely excellent but why did Chris Hayes keep stressing the fact that there is genuine belief there with the anti abortion folks? Saying it the way he did made it sound like a sort of justifiable position because it’s born of sincere belief. So was Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. They sincerely believed they needed to eradicate the Jews. The anti abortion folks want a return to a patriarchal traditional society where women have a specific role as mothers. This is about control of women. This is the belief at the heart of it all. The women in this bubble believe their own propaganda. These are religious zealots, they aren’t rational.

Expand full comment

Regardless of their "sincere beliefs", they have no right to impose them on others, especially when that imposition is ruining people's lives.

Expand full comment

🎯Yes who fucking cares what they are told their invisible friend wants?

Expand full comment

Exactly. Sincere doesn't mean it isn't evil.

Expand full comment

Well at least it all makes sense now. The purpose of these anti-abortion laws is so that medical reasons will replace homicide at the hands of a male partner as the leading cause of death for pregnant women. Because the status quo is kind of embarrassing to men; it makes us look kinda bad, don'tcha think?

"Ripe and fertile"... some really bad karma needs to happen to that man. Please name him. There are some totally sick bastards in the republican party. They are going to be kicked to the curb in November. If not, then we blame the citizens of that state and take ALL of our business elsewhere. God damn those republican politicians.

Expand full comment

He's telling us he's a child molester.

Expand full comment

"Ripe and fertile" are both Biblical words. It's no coincidence he used them in regard to young women.

I went online to look up this representative Jess Edwards..... he has a daughter that was initially in politics that's how he got into it - I wonder what she thinks about her pedophile dad's comment.

Expand full comment

I bet all her friends knew to stay away from the creepy dad.

These religious zealot states are absolutely disgusting - they do not have a problem with rape or incest. They are the fuckin worst!!! It is tragic that they truly do not care about the victim, they care more about a little tiny 1 inch clump of cells in a uterus than they do the actual 11 year old VICTIM. This is shit from like 2,000 years ago. These are the same people who turn the other cheek when priests and ministers molest children making up excuses for their pedophilia, as if a man of cloth has been ordained by god to molest children. These are the same type of people who let ministers groom young girls in the church to betrothed to them. Fuck you Louisiana Republicans, sick fucks!!

Expand full comment

Of course they don't have a problem with it, they think it is their right to rape young women. Their bible encourages it, in fact.

Expand full comment

They think that clump of cells is a soul. That's their deranged mentality.

Expand full comment

If that was true, why don't they care about that construct once it exits the birth canal?

Expand full comment

Yeah. If it's not the women being fetishly obsessed with an embryo or fetus, as if we are gestating a 7-year-old...........it's the misogynistic men who could care less about either, but very much care about controlling us.

Expand full comment

They're evil. I don't know if I always felt that way, despite always being pro-choice, but these last 2 years have convinced me. Girls are "fertile"?! Every statement they make is an abyss of awfulness and they literally never stop digging. I hope hell does exist, so they can all go rot in there, while the doctors sending pills are damn heroes and deserve to be rewarded.

Expand full comment

Yes, they are heroes.

You can go online to plan C pills at the link below to order a variety of different stickers that you can put up anywhere in public to get the word out, restrooms at bars, restaurants, grocery stores, rest stops, truck stops, just paint the town with them. They will ask for a small donation, it's worth it, a very good organization.

On Daily Kos today, "Why six weeks is not six weeks." This briefly addresses the ignorance--not to mention the lies--that go into the six week ban. Yeah, counting pregnancy from the first day of the previous menstrual period is convenient, but there's so much embedded in that convention that it takes reading about the whole mess to really get what's going on.

Expand full comment

It is far from uncommon for people (especially very young people, malnourished people--whether as a result of poverty or anorexia, people who do heavy exercise) to have irregular menstrual cycles, so counting from the LMP (last menstrual period) makes the tragic situation especially farcical. Reminder that using a phone or other electronic period tracker generates information that can be seized and used against the person.

School nurse relayed to me when my daughter was in her office suffering from cramps that she told my daughter to start tracking her period with an app so she could anticipate it and take advil in the runup. I said to the nurse " no no no no" and she apologized and agreed. I said I tell my daughters to put NOTHING anywhere about their periods.

Expand full comment

You are very wise to tell your daughter to avoid apps that create information that can be used against her. But I think every potentially pregnant person should track their periods with a PAPER calendar (which can easily...disappear...if necessary) because knowledge of the date of last menstrual period can be crucial in states with abortion legal up to X weeks. I mean, you'd think they'd calculate from dates of sexual intercourse that could have resulted in impregnation, but nooo....

Jessica - your podcast appearance on Chris Hayes' "Why is this happening" was amazing! When I figure out how to post a picture here, I will do so (it's PP of Maine's sweatshirt saying "Abortion is you Right - Welcome to Maine"!) I feel like a walking billboard! And i think Victoria is right - we should sue Republican for emotional trauma after the Teddy Bear situation....

That Teddy Bear will live in my head forever now >_<. Can we sue Republicans for emotional and psychological damage?

Sadly it should be recreated for an ad, then explain it was real.

I have no words for just how horrifying that is.

As noted, you can't un-see that.

It should be an ad, precisely BECAUSE it is so horrific.

Agreed. It would have to be done with actors portrayed as the underage child. 😣

True, but I suspect it'd be hard to get any ad agency to place it. "Community standards" dontcha know.
