Biden supports abortion as does Harris. It’s common to have the VP be the attack dog. Biden doesn’t have the speaking skills that Kamala has. He had a different speaking style. At this juncture it doesn’t do anyone or help our position to count how often Biden says “abortion”. I’m fully aware the importance of saying abortion and how that de stigmatizes it. I say abortion all the time. Biden is who he is and I am grateful for him and his support. If people are wanting him to change his speaking style I feel that it’s unrealistic. Counting seems petty, divisive, obsessive and a drinking game to me. Cmon stay unified. ❤️

Thanks Jessica for all you do and for this safe space.

I can understand why "potentially pregnant people need abortion as a backstop if they enjoy having sexual activities that could result in pregnancy" is problematic politically. So it makes sense that a lot of the discussion revolves around abortions being sought because the fetus is nonviable or because of the health risks to the pregnant person.

For a more detailed response than "What a shitshow," see Usha Ranji, ALina Salganicoff, and Laurie Sobel, kff.org (May 2, 2024), https://www.kff.org/womens-health-policy/issue-brief/dobbs-era-abortion-bans-and-restrictions-early-insights-about-implications-for-pregnancy-loss. The brief notes that the term "pregnancy loss" includes both miscarriage (aka spontaneous abortion), before 20 weeks of gestation, and stillbirth, after 20 weeks. Most miscarriages are attributed to genetic abnormalities; most stillbirths are attributed to genetic abnormalities, infection, problems with the placenta, or fetal growth restriction. Almost all clinical interventions are the same for miscarriage and stillbirth treatment as for induced abortion. The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is used to manage early miscarriages as well as for elective abortion. Surgical procedures are also the same for pregnancy loss as for elective abortion, but some states limit the availability of certain surgical procedures, with the result that the health of the pregnant person is likely to be endangered if the medically indicated procedure is not available. The paper notes that medically marginalized people, including people of color, may refrain from seeking treatment if they experience a spontaneous pregnancy loss because they are afraid of criminalization.

PS--I think "abortion refugees" or "abortion asylum seekers" is more to the point than "abortion tourists."

Imagine if chemotherapy was banned in some states and we called traveling for it “chemotherapy tourism”. That’s effectively what’s happening here. A medical procedure is being described like it’s optional, like it’s a en vogue destination for jetsetters, like it’s a special treat. 🤮

Abortion is basic healthcare for anyone with a uterus.

I’m so glad when *my* family members had pregnancy issues from needing a D&C after child birth to a non-viable fetus to, yes, failed birth control they could make healthcare decisions and take care of their body and their life without a politician or a federal judge “making the call.”

And this year we decide if that option continues nationally or if there is a federal ban on pregnant healthcare and if imaginary babies and delusions of what the 1950s were like are more important than walking, talking people. That’s the choice come November.

So fuckin infuriating when the forced birthers are the ones actually LYING.......but yet they claim otherwise. Seriously, do they really think we are all that stupid to fall for it?

And they do not represent the WILL of the people nor do Republican politicians in all these banned states.... that one was behind easy to disprove.....if that were the case they wouldn't worry about ballot measures- - so these are really good talking points with people as well as campaigning and advertisements.

I really hate these bastards.

Many many many Americans don't pay attention to this (or anything) until they're inconvenienced. I think lying groups rely on this lack of attention more than stupidity, even though failing to pay attention is stupidity, IMO.

Exactly. It’s about education and attention. And unfortunately there is a huge portion of people who know very little about pregnancy or laws for protecting pregnant people (eg Roe).

And in today’s media environment it’s really difficult to change that. And we don’t have a ground game for accredited schools. People get Calculus, not abortion education.

You'd think Florida would've learned from Gore not to run away from the president.

We've only gotten more gerrymandered since then. Hell even before the last election deathsantis redrew the electoral maps and deleted two majority black districts. His own party told him it was wrong and he pushed it on us anyway!

Now that Florida has banned abortions, how much will it cost to travel out of state for an abortion? Use this online calculator to estimate the total cost including travel, lodging, meals, childcare, lost wages, treatment and more. The app includes a map with states that still offer treatment.
