Good look at the incremental battle in Texas:

"Among the doctors who came to see Johnson was Todd Ivey, a tall man with graying hair. Ivey, who was then sixty, had worked in Houston for decades, but had always left the politics of medicine to politicians. 'We assumed that they would do the right thing,' he said. 'Now they’re stepping into the medical arena.' Ivey spoke of treating a woman who had been diagnosed as having cancer early in her pregnancy. She was bearing her fifth child, and the cancer had spread to her spine. 'I cannot leave my husband with four young children at home,' she told him. Ivey asked an ethics committee to approve a termination that would allow her to receive chemotherapy and radiation. To his dismay, the request was denied. Though the woman’s life was imminently at risk, it took Ivey four days to find a hospital and a physician that would perform the procedure. He came to see her case as evidence that a woman’s illness, no matter how serious, wasn’t enough to qualify for abortion in Texas."

There's an incredible organization called Galvanize that's working on outreach and targeting to moderate white women, and when I joined an informational Zoom call, they said most of the women they are talking to had absolutely no idea a D&C for a miscarriage was technically an abortion. They were DISPLEASED.

I just read the NYT article:

"There has been no coordination between the Biden campaign and Floridians Protecting Freedom, the Florida group that organized it, and there won’t be, said Lauren Brenzel, the group’s campaign director.

“It’s just not who we’re talking to about this initiative,” Brenzel said. “We’re really focused on running a campaign that is focused on patients and doctors.”

“It’s out of step to think that this is a partisan issue,” she added.

-----

I agree with the first part. I would even agree wholeheartedly had Brenzel said it *shouldn't* be a partisan issue. But "it's out of step to think that this is a partisan issue" is just an incredibly stupid thing to say. She may not *like* that it's a partisan issue, but it's definitely a partisan issue. Throwing up roadblocks to practically all reproductive healthcare has been a major Republican priority and 'virtue' signal for the past few DECADES. A symbolic love of fetii is a whole lot easier than actually helping born constituents.

Reminder- getting uppity and dismissive about 'ew politics' is why a bunch of college presidents lost their jobs semi-recently.

Yes, five decades to be precise.

"The majority’s rhetoric indicates that if the pro-choice amendment fails this fall, the Florida Supreme Court remains ready to grant fetuses and embryos a constitutional right to life that prohibits the Legislature from legalizing abortion in the future."

And if FL does that, that means IVF is a target as well, no?

Hospital at Center of Alabama Embryo Ruling Is Ending I.V.F. Services

"Mobile, Ala., hospital at the center of a State Supreme Court ruling that found that frozen embryos could be considered children said on Wednesday that it would no longer provide in vitro fertilization lab services after this year.

In an email explaining the decision, Hannah Peterson, a spokeswoman for the Infirmary Health hospital system, cited “pending litigation and the lack of clarity of the recently passed I.V.F. legislation in the state of Alabama.” "

Let's see what the crazies say about this one. This IVF issue might just might be the "Helen Keller" moment for these people -- where they see the fanaticism and subjugation at work. But then again, maybe not.

Someone, anyone, please explain to me how on earth it's okay in this country to punish a person who helps another person obtain a service in another state where that service is legal? I do not understand how this is constitutional. It's not even like the person is bringing back a *thing* that is illegal in the state. Why can't someone bring a challenge to the SC on this?

If my friend lives in Utah, where gambling is illegal, and I give my friend a ride and a few bucks to gamble in Vegas, what crime have I committed? Why is no one fighting this? I don't get it.

They're in essence making women prisoners of the states they live in. It's crazy!

Expand full comment

Exactly on the gambling. The same with beer in the dry county , if you and your friend drive to the next county over to buy beer and bring it back to your house where you live in a dry county. .

I suspected if the right case comes along this will be escalated, but the thing is you need an actual case. But of course you can't rely on scoutus to be fair in a case like this, they could decline to hear it claiming the bogus "states rights". 5 SCOTUS are Christian Taliban extremists, they are fucking useless.

Expand full comment

My analogy with the beer would be driving your friend to the fun county so she can drink the beer there and then driving back to your dry county. How is that illegal ?

Yeah, no one can bring such a case to the SC because it will lose because *they have the votes.* We are no longer a country of laws. It's party. And that party wants to subjugate us. I don't know how Roberts was okay with that citizenry bounty brigade law. I don't know how that's constitutional. We need a constitutional convention.

I just got done reading Thom Hartmann article about Republicans wanting Repeal voter rights for women. You should read it. The Republicans want to turn us into a third world country, something worse than the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Where do I find that article? I've not read from Hartmann yet. He'll be new for me. :-)

And reading his piece, I'm coming to the conclusion that the best way I can contribute in this election is to help people navigate voting in swing states. (I'm in NJ.) My niece and sister-in-law did this for 2022 voters in GA. They helped them cure their vote.

“So I don't want women to vote because I want strong marriages. I want cohesive households. I want representative government all the way down to the family. And I also want babies not murdered. I don’t want drag queen story hour. I don’t want Rainbow Jihad. And none of that could happen, if women couldn’t vote.”

My jaw dropped at that. How many people in this guy's MEGA MAGA church hear this discriminatory crap?

Sounds like repro organizations in Texas need to do commercials, billboards, social media to get the accurate info out there.

Even as Republicans work overtime to eliminate abortion, a vital network of providers continues to make self-managed abortion accessible. Pregnant people need to know that help is out there. Community networks will mail pills for free to most red states!

As an AED reader, you may already be familiar with Plan C (https://www.plancpills.org/). If not, its mission is to ensure that people know that abortion pills are available by mail in every state and that self-managed abortions are medically safe. Toward that end, their comprehensive website not only connects people to suppliers--it also provides media kits and stickers (https://www.plancpills.org/social-media-toolkit#IG-with-caption).

If you live in a red state (or will be visiting one), order stickers from Plan C and paste them everywhere. Bathrooms, of course—in a location where a person sitting on the toilet will see it (on the side of the toilet paper dispenser, for example, where it might not be easily seen—and removed--by someone cleaning the bathroom). In airports and at bus stops, on phone poles outside clubs and coffee shops, in music venues, in schools, in Target dressing rooms. Use your imagination. Give them to teenagers and have them distribute them wherever they go. Include men’s bathrooms.

If you live in a blue state, have stickers delivered to supportive friends or relatives who live in red states. And, of course, their usefulness isn’t limited to red states. Abortions can be hard to come by in blue states, too.

Stick(er) it to the man!

After being in a conflict situation in an organization to which I belonged, I realized those persons causing the conflict only thought something was fair if they got their way. They spread lies and innuendo about the situation, and people believed them. I realized those divisive folks were only interested in getting THEIR WAY. As the chair of the organization, I had to hold a meeting to vote on the issue in question. The vote did not go the way of the divisive group, who all eventually left and started their own group. I do miss a certain few of those folks, but certainly not the ringleader of the divisive group, who is a narcissistic bully. Things have been challenging for those of us who remain, but we're not throwing up our hands and giving up. It was and is important to stand up to bullies. Otherwise, they will continue to cause harm, which is how we came to be in such a difficult situation today.

“Florida abortion rights advocates are worried that President Joe Biden will hurt their ballot measure by alienating Republicans….” I am a Floridian who is an advocate and I worked hard to get folks to sign the petition. I am also a Democrat and ardent Biden supporter. What do these “advocates” propose? Should Biden drop out? How on earth can he curry favor with Republicans without alienating Democrats and abandoning his platform and principles? If Republicans who support the ballot measure are willing to abandon it because a candidate who they don’t like supports it too….. I will refrain from finishing my thought.

I just want to point out how nice it is that Democrats get to criticize Biden non-stop. Isn't that nice? Book's career isn't going to get torched, she won't receive death threats over it. That used to be a right but it sure seems like a privilege these days.

I think she's totally WRONG, by the way. Moderate Republicans should really be able to get behind Joe Biden since he too, is uncomfortable with abortion due to his Catholicism but will still defend it and make it a primary campaign issue because it's just that important. Wish more people would sneak that fact into more conversations down there, not less.

Reminds me of when planned parenthood kept insisting that abortion is not a partisan issue while Republicans kept punching them in the face. Who is ultimately responsible for Florida abortion ban? Trump. He overturned Roe and made this nightmare possible but taking a position against him is “partisan”?
