Do you have any information about abortion rights activists allegedly being arrested at SCOTUS? What was the reason given & were pro-life activists arrested as well?

Today is a big day. SCOTUS better put this fire out for good. Undermining FDA's authority for political gain of one party will destroy the system of government we have.

{PSA: if you didn't watch Maddow's A block last night, I encourage you to do it. She puts the state of the union in a light like no other and the importance of our actions to save the system of government we have.}

Capitalism sucks at its job if it can’t put a stop to this. Abortion bans are creating these maternal health deserts, forcing these unnecessary procedures and costs. These drug companies/the FDA can’t make the $$$ off of their medications if they’re banned or severely restricted. I must admit I had hoped that our profit driven dystopia would work in our favor for once. Misogyny is pretty damn expensive.

Chickenshit insurrectionist Josh Hawley has a viable opponent for his Senate seat, Lucas Kunce. From an email I received from his campaign:

"This coming Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in the mifepristone case to ban the most commonly used abortion pill in all 50 states.

This is the case led by Josh Hawley’s wife and decided by his donor judge.

The Hawley Family Business is responsible for stripping away reproductive rights in our country — from banning abortion meds to overturning Roe v. Wade — and Josh Hawley has abused his power as Missouri’s U.S. Senator to do it all."

"In 2017, Matthew Kacsmaryk was nominated to be a federal judge for the North Texas district court. His confirmation stalled for years due to bipartisan opposition over his bizarre obsession with controlling people’s bodies, an issue he was even caught lying about during his nomination process:"

The next year, while his nomination stalled in the Senate, Kacsmaryk made an investment in his future by becoming a campaign donor to Josh Hawley, a fellow member of the Federalist Society — a group of corporate activist lawyers with funders including Chevron, Google, and the Kochs..."

"As soon as Hawley was sworn into the U.S. Senate in 2019, he decided to make Kacsmaryk, his campaign donor, a federal judge. Hawley became the deciding vote to confirm Kacsmaryk to the northern Texas district court, despite even more bipartisan opposition over Kacsmaryk’s Big Brother views on contraceptives and personal freedoms..."

"Josh Hawley’s wife led the suit. His donor was the judge.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Hawley’s DONOR judge ruled in favor of the suit led by Hawley’s WIFE, calling for a near-immediate ban on the abortion pill in all 50 states — the first time a judge has ever unilaterally tried to take a drug off the market against FDA objections..."

"Just days after Kacsmaryk’s ruling, Josh Hawley used his taxpayer-funded Senate office to submit an amicus brief demanding that the Supreme Court end a temporary injunction blocking the ruling (in his wife's lawsuit) by a judge (his campaign donor) to ban America's most commonly-used abortion medication."

The right has been trying to kill off public schools for 25 years now. These kinds of tactics are familiar to teachers everywhere. You know how they talk about the abortion "industry"? They're telling on themselves. Lots of people are making money destroying our rights.

Josh needs to get the hell out of politics, that guy is one of the worst. He's also an insurrection isn't. He's so in love with himself, he really thinks men are the best - - given the title of his book: Manhood

I didn’t know that it was Hawley’s wife that led the suit.

The NYT has a profile of her today and she's a nasty piece of work. Here's how it opens: "It was 2014, and Erin Morrow Hawley was fighting against the egg-laying hens of Missouri. Specifically, a new requirement that chicken cages have enough space for the hens to stand up, turn around and stretch out." It goes on to say, "Ms. Hawley believed that a blue state had no right to impose its values and rules on Missouri’s farmers" but apparently she thinks red states have a right to impose their values and rules on blue states.

Two causes for optimism: 1 the Court stayed the 5th Circuit’s narrowed injunction,(going back to 2016 rules) by a vote of 7-2.

2 In the big ACA cases, Roberts always voted with the industry.

Expand full comment

Do we know the vote was 7-2 or just that Thomas and Son of Sam were the only ones to publicly dissent?

Fair question. Not sure. I assumed if there were some noted dissents then others were in majority. A’s opinion says Thomas would deny. So …..

I also think SCOTUS will toss the case on standing but we’ll see. I was relieved to read 1-2 weeks ago that judge shopping is no longer, def a win there.

I’ve complained about the American Assoc. of Pro-Life Ob Gyns before. i also do it often in the WAPO comments section (under a different nickname). This group of bogus doctors is appalling. Their website is pathetic and filled with lies - they’ve even re-written the Hippocratic oath. i don’t understand how they can be allowed to practice medicine. But what irks me the most is that journalists often quote them to “get the other side” but this only legitimizes their BS and lies. Journalists need to do their homework - just spend 5 minutes on their website and you’ll see all the garbage posted there. If someone from the WAPO, NY Times or Wall St Journal wants to quote them, they should include a better description of them. They don’t even have many members, come on, journalists, it’s not hard.

My guess on how the Supreme Court will handle the mifepristone case is that they will throw the case out on standing grounds. We will see tomorrow. If most the the questioning is on standing, that is an indication the court is leaning on deciding the case that way. I'm going to be pretty surprised if the court actually gets to the merits of the case.

Didn’t that woman with the evangelical wedding website not really have standing either? And they still ruled on her side? They should throw it out, but I don’t trust them at all.

Great point Natalie. I was shocked that such a Hypothetical non issue would be heard. Worrisome and I don’t trust them either.

There are a lot of claims being ginned up based on extremely dubious standing claims. Maybe a majority of the Court would like to get rid of these en masse. Here’s its chance.

I wish I shared your optimism, Victor, and I sincerely hope you are right.

But I’m a woman, and I’ve learned in the last couple years just how vicious misogyny has become in the US. Differences between men and women used to be something to make jokes about: Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus—haha! But now that women are literally dying from easily treatable conditions, I don’t find any of it the least bit humorous.

We’ll soon find out.

The ruling on mifepristone by SCOTUS is huge. After they screwed us royally with Roe, they saw many of their voters turn on them and the trumpublican party generally.

Should they decide to utilize the Comstock Act to further deny abortion access, all bets are off for a trumpublican sweep come November.

Will they risk it? Recent history of reproductive rights decisions dictates they will uphold Comstock and screw us again. Count on all those Catholic justices to pay homage to their religion as well as to their beloved Heritage Foundation.

I'm sad for American girls and women who are subjected to these bans by sadistic cristo-fascist white men. There are sadistic women involved, but the fact is, most of the sadistic are republican white men. Sadism and cruelty are the point, and we'll find out soon if the Supreme Court joins them in this cruelty.
