'The document also recommends that “abortion should be clearly defined as only those procedures that intentionally end an unborn child’s life…miscarriage management or standard ectopic pregnancy treatments should never be conflated with abortion.”'

The real corruption of language here is not the definition of abortion, but rather the definition of a pregnancy. They have replaced "pregnancy" with "unborn child". As long as we continue to tolerate this blatant superstitious notion, every stage of gestation from fertilized ova to pre-neonate is going to be an "unborn child". Not even "unborn infant", but some kind of child.

Please type out Hobby Lobby while also providing the link to the billionaires behind the bizarre Jesus ads. If you shop at Hobby Lobby you support this shit. I still don't understand what you get by someone converting to Christianity. The only thing I can think of is now you joined the cult so they

can brainwash you.

Where are these Catholics getting all this money? In the Philly area where I live they are too busy selling off land to pay for the child sex lawsuits.

Happy Galentine’s Day!

Apparently I'm still quite pissed off 🙃

One of trumps bitches claimed to be an economic genius by citing that the economy was a mess based on the current price of eggs.  Nonsense.  Last I heard,  deflocking due to avian flu was the primary instigator.  The supply chain issues are likely also impacting the issue.   The bottom line regardless is that Biden is not causing the issue.

Of all the stupid...

House Republicans passed impeachment articles targeting Department of Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas.  Now they are salivating over the thought of doing the same thing to the Bidens.  Fund our allies,  fix the border,  stop the gun related insanity.  Abort trump!!!

I think people would be surprised about cities in "blue or purple" states. It's worth noting the data was updated in Jan 2024, but the data is provided through Dec. 31, 2022. I looked up Richmond and it gets 2 stars. San Diego gets 2 1/2 stars. It is quite a comprehensive list. Kuddos to those pulling together this information and providing it in an easy to read format. There are items I would not have thought of.

It will prove helpful going forward. Yes, ... work to do.

I decided to answer this question and found this NYT which I’m sharing and gives me some hope. My instincts tell me he’s another Manchin but Gov Hogul did what she could to get Suozzi to commit to full reproductive rights. I think this link should be available to all:

One more thing I do is watch (because I live a bit too far to go often in person) sermons from the [very liberal] Unitarian Universalist church in Montclair, NJ. This past Sunday's was great -- about the fascism that is rising from "the far right" (their words) and how to retain your humanity and not lose sight of hope. I find their sermons to be modern, to acknowledge all of our current struggles, and yet to provide hope in the end. UU is an open tent to nonbelievers, believers of all concepts of a creator, and everyone in between. No judgments. LGBTQ+, BLM, Women's Rights, anti white supremacy... You can find the sermons on YouTube.

I have to tell myself to STOP thinking stressful thoughts. I feel such despair often, like life as we've known it is getting really dark.

But when I start lapsing into this, I tell myself to STOP and I redirect myself to something pleasurable, like a sitcom, some Miles Davis, or practicing the ocarina (ha, yes - I sound like a dying owl). But it's work. I have to make myself stop ruminating.

Venting here helps a lot as well !!!!

What also helps is that I have 3 teens, and they want to feel hope. So when I'm with them, I try to be upbeat.

Don't let it take a toll. Live in the moment and enjoy the moment. Don't let the bastards get you down.

I wonder about those Jesus ads. I've seen different ones at various times. Point taken on what the background of one scene was (although even there, there would be multiple interpretations of the message) but, in general, the ads seem to highlight positive aspects of Jesus / Christianity; at least, I think that's the effect on the viewer. If you don't go look up the website and the source (and I never have), you wouldn't know they're put out by right-wing maniacs. You'd just be reminded of the good things, like humility and service to others. By reminding us of the real Jesus, it might even make you notice when people use that name and that faith for other purposes, purposes which are hateful and controlling, and you might then be inclined to view that abuse rather negatively. In other words, there is a way in which these ads could backfire on these fuckers, and it would be very fitting.

Amanda Marcotte at Salon has the lowdown on those ads and what they’re after: https://www.salon.com/2024/02/13/hobby-lobby-funded-jesus-super-bowl-ads-cant-hide-the-hate-that-fuels-the-christian-right/

Good link to have here; thank you. I'm just musing that the vast majority of people seeing the ad won't follow up on it, so what they take away is a reminder of the good things in the Christian story, the things that really don't prime you to see these sponsors in a favorable light. Ultimately they're not trying to sell Christianity; they're trying to sell their specific version of Christianity, and that might be harder to sell after seeing an ad like this. At least that's what I thought, as a nonbeliever who comes from a Catholic family. By promoting 'real' Christian values, it calls attention in a negative way to those who abuse the faith. I was just speculating that it would be fitting if the ads made people more loving and tolerant and thereby less receptive to what these people are selling.

It shouldn’t shock me - but it does - that the AG of Alabama could say that women could be dragged back from other states to be prosecuted and that pregnant women could be prohibited from leaving the state and get NO COVERAGE from mainstream media.

'...health- and life-saving care aren't really abortions at all.' This won't work though. Because there is plenty of health- and life-saving care that they also want to ban, whatever they call the procedures. And Republicans have never been able to deny these groups anything they want. The language can't change that.

I've put this link in before, but here is a fantastic study that was done on the language and proceedings around Georgia's fetal personhood law.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/26410397.2019.1686201?cookieSet=1

Basically you can claim a fetus on a tax return there at 6 weeks. It's hideous.

Fetal personhood is the death of us. I shake my head in disbelief on all that is going on, and want to take myself and two daughters to live in Canada. This country is going down the tubes. That voters don't blame Trump for the demise of Roe is so uninformed.

14th amendment says "all persons born".......

I've been pondering this one a long time.... How can a state pass a law on fetal personhood when in direct conflict is the US Constitution? It would be challenged for sure, but they know this..... It could take 5 years for an organization like ACLU to challenge it... ... lots of damage in those 5 years. And what if it went to SCOTUS.....theyd likely refuse to hear it as too many of them are corrupt.....theyd say "states rights".

And is Alabama going to shackle all pregnant women... they sure the hell would if they could.

Paxton and Abbott's efforts to restrict Texans' right to travel brings up this vexing question: who is Texan?

People born in the state? What about the children of undocumented people, born in Texas? Someone who moved to Texas for work a year or two ago? Someone temporarily in the state to care for an elderly family member, but whose residence is in New York? A person on a week's vacation or business trip? Someone born in the state who has a legal residence elsewhere? A college student whose family is elsewhere?

'Tis a conundrum.

I doubt it, it took over 300 years to admit they were wrong with G."

"Pope John Paul II declared officially the other day that Galileo had it right all along when he said that the Earth circled the sun, instead of the other way around. And the Roman Catholic Church, though it meant well based on knowledge of the time and a literal interpretation of Scripture, had it all wrong when the Inquisition forced Galileo to bite his tongue to save his neck for the heresy of his ways."

Thus, after passage of 359 years, ends one of the most celebrated divisions of reason and dogma."

"That distinction is really important! Because what they’re saying is that abortion is never legal, because health- and life-saving care aren’t really abortions at all." This is part of Catholic theological thinking, I think it is called dual effect. The idea is that if your intention is not to kill, then it is ok. for example, if you give a dying patient a dose of morphine big enough to kill them, it is ok, as long as your intention is not to kill them but to relieve their pain (even if you know it will kill, them, go figure). It seems like hair-splitting to me, but this is the viewpoint. So again, this is basically importing religious beliefs into law.
