Jessica, I volunteer with an organization that does abortion clinic escorting. We’ve had a couple of issues lately with Uber drivers finding out they were dropping off at an abortion clinic then going to the protesters to get their info. Today, a driver stopped and stayed with the protesters the whole time we were there. She also said next time she would take the woman to a pregnancy crisis center instead of the abortion clinic. Any idea on how to talk to Uber about this or is this something that you’ve heard of happening? Can’t imagine a woman wanting to go to get an abortion and the driver starts with the anti abortion rhetoric or taking them to a different place than they want to go. Many women don’t understand what crisis pregnancy centers are and will be terrified when they are dropped off there would assume. Any suggestions?

What’s up with Ashley moody and her betrayal of women in Florida? Please shine a light on that, she should be ashamed. I listened to a story on npr about forced sterilization of “feeble minded” women in Virginia. Their right to have children is just as important as my right not to. Wtf is wrong with our government that they feel they can control people like this? It’s just appalling, I have to turn this shit off once in a while. It is bothering me all the time, the 65,000 women that were forced to bear their rapists children in America in 2023. I hope they were able to put them up for adoption. In Washington state pharmacists are going to be able to prescribe abortion medication now. Good news.

Another incredible update! @jessica I wonder if you can carve out the ballot initiatives by battleground states. It's a real shame Nevada isn't going until 2026 bc voter turnout might be more Dem if abortion was on the ballot. Like gay marriage turned out for Obama (I think that was the right combo anyway!)

I hope Kate Cox declines as the Biden's are not showing up for abortion or reproductive care so why support them outside the ballot box. Unless they guarantee 💯 that Biden uses the word abortion at least 5 times in the speech then maybe except you know he'd be so wishy washy and weak sauce cause he's afraid to say the word and stand with the pregnant people being raped, terrorized, abused, and killed. So yeah, say no to sotu invite and let's have a counter protest AED party instead where Cox and others speak about abortion and use the word Biden is afraid to say.

Let us not go down this road. It is counter-productive. Let us win H, S, and the WH first with the widest margins.

I disagree. Biden is allowing his private religious beliefs to override policy discussions and decisions which lead to his disavowing abortion and his refusal to use the term. So why publicly show up for him when he doesn't publicly show up for pregnant people? We can still privately support him if we want at the ballot box so we don't lose democracy. However, we need to hold him accountable for the harm his choices in distancing himself from the word and realities of abortion just as much as we hold all religious people accountable who are forcing their religion on pregnant people. If he won't show up publicly for us I think those of us who are invited to support him under the gag order and silencing tactics his team is using as described in the article then the consequences of his denial of abortion means I will show up at the ballot for democracy and I will not show up publicly for someone who continues to deny abortion as medical care and refuses to be seen next to the word.

Of course, you are free to do what you like. I will voice discouragement of that which will weaken Biden in any shape or form. You may still decide to vote for him but your opinions may persuade someone else to sit it out or vote third party. We have seen this happen before siphoning away votes from strong candidates. You know who I blame for our current predicament, Bernie and what he did in 2016. And, don't even get me started on what happened in 2008 primary. Democrats are experts at shooting themselves in the foot.

There will come a time to hold Biden's feet to the fire but not right now.

I blame our current predicament on the fact that people prefer power over people. There is room to hold people accountable as our representatives, to ask them to do better for all of us (not only the ones of a shared religion or other identity), and also support them at the ballot. Stop derailing the conversation about holding Biden accountable with a distraction about the past. Live in this moment and ask for your needs, my needs are that my representatives protect the freedom, liberty, and health of pregnant people and that includes abortion. If we silence each other asking for our needs then you are doing the work for those who want to control and dominate pregnant bodies. Ask for your needs pregnant people and show up for the people who show up for you. Demand Biden face abortion and to do more than roe. Demand reproductive justice. If he wants us to show up for him he needs to show up for us.

I am not silencing you or anyone else nor am I distracting. I am asking everybody to be smart. It is a PSA based on historical evidence of losing something of value with a few tens of thousands of votes in a couple of states. That is our reality. You can take whatever 2 cents from what I say or not at all.

Yes you are trying to silence me and those who are attempting to hold Biden accountable. You are trying to use shame, blame, and disregard of our perspectives. Stop asking us to be silent, stop assuming we are not intelligent, and stop assuming we don't vote for democracy. Part of democracies is the fundamental right to criticize elected officials and hold them accountable while still being active engaged voters. Dissent is a vital and needed part of public discourse. I love pregnant people and want them to get the medical care they need. I am full of rage at Biden actively suppressing the use of that word at the event Jessica mentioned. My need for the life, liberty, and freedom of pregnant people and Biden threatens that by his avoiding, erasing, and silencing the use of the word abortion. And his behavior and preferences and modeling hiding from this word strengthens those who want full control over bodies. And your behavior is modeling that the needs of pregnant people are less than the needs of Biden and his avoidance of the word and his discomfort. You are prioritizing bidens comfort over the harm being done to pregnant people. I understand you are scared about losing democracy too. The threats of fascism are a real and present danger as well. The issues are complex and both deserve our attention. I won't sacrifice one for the other tho and will speak up for both as best I can. I hope you will too as we got the scraps of Roe last time and it ended in this tragedy. If we don't hold them accountable even more now than we will continue to lose bodily autonomy and freedom along with democracy. I choose democracy and abortion.

"I fear we cannot make ANY mistakes"

Who is this 'we' you speak of? Democrats? Pregnant capable people being harassed into silence for criticiquing their president who won't use a medical term (btw Biden is making the republicans war on terms win by also not using the term - how is this not a point of outrage that he is helping them win the word war?!?!?)?

If I wanted to shut up and fall in line - I would join fascism - wait - is that what you people who are asking people to shut up about Biden want us to do? Ew, gross - not drinking that poison.

Instead - I want people to stop having their bodies policed and criminalized and killed by the state. I will criticize any politician of any jello flavor who does not also full throated support those values and needs. I vote for democracy and I show up for solidarity with the most impacted.

By telegraphing his fear of the word abortion, by asking for less than what we deserve by using weak sauce 'restore roe' - this is not inspiring me to do more than the bare minimum for him either.

It is a mistake to give your voice over in fear, silence others for your fear and vow obediance for fear - that is what fascism does - it leverages fear for safety.

I choose truth. I choose freedom - including bodily autonomy in that freedom. I choose to vote democracy. I choose to show up with the oppressed and not shove my fear in their face to silence them.

People are power - so stop asking us to shut up and give our power to someone who is afraid of the word abortion. Ask for your needs, tell them what you value, and tell them when they are not meeting your basic needs for human dignity.

Thank you for telling me your needs as well. We definitely disgaree on tactics as I do not believe asking people not to speak their needs or truth for reasons like {must elect XX or can't lose XX or these scary people want me dead} is okay. My needs are valid and deserve to be heard.

My frustration of your and the several other comments all stating to some degree that silence on Biden's failings is necessary or it "will make us all lose" rhetoric and logic is bewildering to me. I understand your fear and it came across in your first post as well this "I truly fear trying to fight a perfect battle and losing the war."

We are already LOSING (restoring roe does not stop the chaos and pain of bodies being surveiled and criminalized and murdered as stats during roe show us) so why not be BOLD and ask for what we need. Be BOLD and tell Biden that we need more than 'restore roe' and a language war role model (say abortion is healthcare Biden and I will show up for you as a peron rather than voting for democracy) if he wants us to do more for him than vote.

If you want to give him your time and energy and try to politely silence his naysayers on the internet - you do you. Just don't pretend like showing that kind of obediance for power is actually going to get our needs met. It got us Roe last time and look at what an utter failure that sh**show ended up being.

ERA NOW. ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE. END FEMICIDE.

I looked it up. Turns out only primates suffer ectopic pregnancies. Farm animals don't. Ectopic pregnancies have a 1-2 per 100 pregnancies incidence and they call that "rare". I wouldn't call 1 to 2 percent rare. That's just ONE of the complications humans suffer. The guy was full of crap. I suppose he thinks human babies can walk moments after birth, too. What a moron.

I don’t even know where to start commenting on this one. I get empathy PTSD from thinking about the women and girls who aren’t learning about their bodies. Who are taught they must control their bodies at all times lest they tempt men and boys to lust. Who believe it is their fault when they are raped. Who are so infantilized they don’t see themselves as a person without being defined by their fathers/pastors/husbands. I’m describing myself at age 30 and before. I know how damaged I am, how I’ve had to fight for my own version of normal. I am devastated for everyone who will be like me because of these assholes. Jessica writes about a scant fraction of these impacts, because so much of it happens in seething, silent shame.

Regarding the last study it is sad that so many women know so little about their menstrual cycles pregnancy contraception and abortion. I see this as a basis for how it becomes easier for the state to control women’s bodies.

I have been helping this woman I met at a shelter for several years and in that time have learned a world of disinformation. It's like you can't believe what these people are being told but yet they are being told. She now has five children. Only two of which were planned. She asked me for help with adoption but in the end she couldn't do it. So NO AMY (coney barrett) - making adoption "easier" is a totally lie. It's not easy for the mother!

Regarding that last study - I swear the vast majority of our societal problems right now are directly related to how poor our education system is. And, perhaps consequently, how anti-expert and anti-intellectual our culture has become.

Expand full comment

Along with that it may not be the education system itself but the parents' reluctance to participate in it because it is secular and will "corrupt" their child. Our school district here in CA has a robust age-appropriate sex education program in 5th, 7th and 9th grades. My kids learned about their bodies here at home and at school. Parents are notorious for opting their kids out of these classes wanting to teach this "sensitive" subject themselves but many of them do not teach their kids. Then they are shocked when they bring their daughter into the ER with cramps, and she is in labor.

Then there is the religious school and their "abstinence only" education. We all know how well that works. These poor horny teenagers being shamed for their surging hormones. I had friends growing up who endured a lot of anal sex because that way they thought they were technically still virgins. Gotta love that ass backwards purity culture.

Agreed. Also how much the right has fought and succeeded in preventing sex education in schools

I agree partially but we need to be careful of criticizing education as in the teacher's themselves. In all red states there too many bullshit laws that prevent them from properly educating, crappy state required limited curriculum and words they are not allowed to use. Here in Tennessee there are like 6 laws about sex education.... that is to say: there really is no sex education......they are required to teach abstinence and saving sex for marriage. And parents can OPT out their kids from this class! These young women learn ovulation via Google search. Imagine what the young men are learning from Google. No honest sex education here . I Iiterraly got better sex education in small town Iowa in 1987. Our teacher brought in a nurse from planned parenthood. This country has regressed so badly. Now the Iowa Governor Kim defunded PP.

I hear you; I wasn’t directing this at teachers, but at the education systems themselves. Many of which are underfunded and undervalued.

The home school programs are very uneven as well. When the T political chaos ends and some news organization does a deep dive on the conservative curriculum (aka “alternative curriculum”) being pushed out to those who want to home school it’s going to be very eye opening for many, especially the sciences.

Agree. 😊 Who would want to be a teacher in a red state these days.. or a doctor. Brain drain. And the voucher scams... And state tax dollars being siphoned to vouchers for the rich. Exactly! And what does Josh's wife do while he's in prison for being a child molester? Of course she stays married to him, cuz he's the head of the household..... she allowed herself to be indoctrinated into a cult which views her as nothing, submissive, only value is pushing out babies. I suppose that someone could make an argument that his wife is a victim of oppression due to the culture and religion they grew up in, but at some point we have to cut the cord and run the other direction, especially when it comes to sex abuse.
