And then there is this news from how R candidates responded to the Cox case. Nikki Haley is the manipulator extraordinaire with her comments of “compassion,” knowing full well the worst issues often happen after 20 weeks! They have spent the past 7+ years, with the help of media, condemning every abortion after 20 weeks knowing full well that all of those had complicating circumstances for a variety of reasons. Her “compassion” comments sound reasonable and appeal to one’s emotions, but the reality of what she believes and has signed into law is actually cruel and non compassionate to the lives of many families. Famously southern talk for stab them in the back, with a smile, while telling them you will pray for them, empathize or sympathize with them, but in reality offer no real legitimate help on any meaningful level. Pray for what, exactly? Be compassionate how, exactly? I wish an interviewer would ask. Support them in a real legitimate way how, exactly? All Haley is asking for is for the R base to not talk hatefully. That’s really it. Apparently she believes that change will save the R party from the fact they are dismantling freedom for families to choose their reproductive paths. And Vivic is lost in the abyss of pre 1970’s talk when women were limited on so many financial abilities I just can’t even begin to get into his head. His wife is a professional in the medical community. He’s a complete Trumplican phony. The media plays into their hands so well.

I made the mistake of googling what the forced birth crowd is saying about the Kate Cox case, wondering if they might be just quietly avoiding the topic, but boy was I wrong. Here’s a piece from the National Review: https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/a-pro-life-response-to-the-tragic-case-in-texas/ There is no reasoning with these people. They are black-and-white zealots. If Kate Cox had died during all of this, they literally would not care. I know we all know this, but it often hits me again and again because it is just so profoundly immoral and illogical. Women are expendable to them. There is no other bottom line.

I was at least glad to see the number of critical comments on that article.

This mom from the National Review article/video sure is making a lot of assumptions about Cox and about others who make decisions she believes “are never the way.” She has zero idea of Cox’s previous complications or even truly what all her current complications are. Proves the point of willful ignorance when judging others from a tunnel visioned lens with personal assumptions not based on reality. Cox will sleep fine. She will own her choice. She will move forward and I pray will be able to have another baby if she chooses after this ordeal. She will honor her lost pregnancy for the rest of her life however she chooses because at least they haven’t taken that choice completely away. Yet. But they would if they could.

"And this is not to brag but my children died naturally, peacefully. They were not harmed."

When people say "not to brag," they mean they're bragging. This is a really fucked up thing to brag about that you let your babies die a long and painful death probably over hours or days for sanctimonious virtue signaling. I really can't stand sanctimonious people that believe suffering is a badge of honor. Especially of your own babies.

Expand full comment

It’s also erroneous to assume that “natural” is “peaceful.” By that logic, why do we have doctors at all???

Expand full comment

Yeah I doubt it was at all peaceful for those babies.

Agree 100%. Sanctimonious and narcissistic. It’s insane to assume that what you decided for yourself and your own medical situation is any kind of objective correct decision that should apply to someone else’s entirely different medical situation and life. These people do not know how to fuck off.

The comments were absolutely horrifying, too. I know that these people only make up 10% of opinions on abortion but it is disturbing to actually see in action how these people really think. Unbelievably evil.

I saw some pretty devastating critical comments earlier today! Of course there were some crazies too. Maybe they had to call in the true believers to flood the comments section and push the critical ones down the list.

I made the same mistake. They are going to find every .1% of hope in stories like the Santorum’s without all the knowledge of the actual case they are twisting themselves up about or even the thought of the costs & logistics of after care for all concerned, as well as the risk of ending Cox’s ability to carry a wanted child in the future. Santorum was on Newsmax saying “All we ask...” as if they own the argument and after qualifying his statements as not knowing the specifics of this case. Nor did the interviewer explain the specifics of this case. No mention of leaking amniotic fluid or cramping or heart/kidney issues the 20 week fetus has in addition to the extra gene. Important context they completely ignore and many are so willfully ignorant they don’t understand that the likelihood of the miracle they so desperately believe will happen is in reality not in the cards. Plus the 22-24 week limits for abortion care in many states also put limits on Cox’s time frame to make decisions for her care, which is currently even less accessible due to the laws this same group has pushed. Infuriating because his interview is what many of them are holding as the beacon of light while also claiming the fetus can already feel pain (not proven from another false not peer reviewed manipulation of facts). Two VERY different situations between Santorum’s & Cox’s. There really is no talking logic or “weighing risks” with them. The hypocrisy of their views don’t even compute in their brains from a lens of reality. Plus they will be the first to bitch about insurance costs & where their tax dollars are spent, with zero concept of how their views affect that. As you wrote, they don’t care. It’s just an “emotion with an opinion” for them, tethered to a faith (usually a hope for “God’s miracles”) that they believe everyone should subscribe to without the weighing of risks or any other metric. The hatefulness I read from that crowd was excruciatingly depressing.

I was watching a video about the plummeting birth rates in China and Russia and it occurs to me that a key factor in pushing anti-abortion legislation could be money. When there are uncertain economic conditions, people have fewer children. Fewer children means fewer workers. Fewer workers means a slowing economy and higher wages for the workers who exist because of supply of workers. The US has historically mitigated this with immigrants, but they are restricting immigration so they need to force American women to have more babies while not giving them more money or support so that their profits stay high.

Women obtained the right to vote 123 years ago. But women still are paid less than men for the same work. Still more women graduate from college than men and earn more graduate degrees, many women are very successful in challenging careers. Since the disastrous Supreme Court decision overturning Roe thanks to Donald Trump's Supreme Court appointees we have seen the Trump supporting states enact punitive anti-abortion statutes. Until the mid nineteenth Century midwives routinely performed abortions. It was when men doctors wanted to enter the care of women patients that you begin to see limits in what care women should receive. These limits became law with the Comstock Acts. These laws were passed in the 1870's and they are replicated in current laws in Republican states. That we see a repeat of laws originally passed 123 years ago illustrate that this is more than just anti-abortion sentiment; it is a war on women. It is an attempt to to take one right away from women, if that succeeds then other rights that women have may be taken away. Women across the country should demand that government should have no role at all in any issue that deals with women's bodily autonomy.

Very concerning news that major pharmacy chains have been handing over medical data - without a warrant - to law enforcement agencies. The surveillance on our health care continues apace and HIPAA doesn't protect a patient here.

"Pharmacies’ records hold some of the most intimate details of their customers’ personal lives, including years-old medical conditions and the prescriptions they take for mental health and birth control."

"Because the chains often share records across all locations, a pharmacy in one state can access a person’s medical history from states with more-restrictive laws. Carly Zubrzycki, an associate professor at the University of Connecticut law school, wrote last year that this could link a person’s out-of-state medical care via a 'digital trail' back to their home state..."

"In briefings, officials with eight American pharmacy giants — Walgreens Boots Alliance, CVS, Walmart, Rite Aid, Kroger, Cigna, Optum Rx and Amazon Pharmacy — told congressional investigators that they required only a subpoena, not a warrant, to share the records."

"A subpoena can be issued by a government agency and, unlike a court order or warrant, does not require a judge’s approval. To obtain a warrant, law enforcement must convince a judge that the information is vital to investigate a crime."

"Officials with CVS, Kroger and Rite Aid said they instruct their pharmacy staff members to process law enforcement requests on the spot, saying the staff members face 'extreme pressure to immediately respond,' the lawmakers’ letter said."

Did Texas SCOTUS just deny permission while simultaneously asserting that the doctor’s word is enough and they should not be involved? 🧠 🌌 🤯

They denied and then they blamed the doctors. To quote Jessica...

the dobbs decision is appalling. but i remain convinced it will end up having been a tremendous gift. it has angered, energized and activated people in blue, purple and red states. and it will help the dems take back the house and retain control of the senate. we need to keep fighting hard. we will win.

I hope so, but we are not out of the woods yet.

agreed. we must continue to support/volunteer for/contribute to candidates who put retaining/regaining access to abortion and birth control front and center in their campaigns. and we need to get the issue before voters directly through referenda. voters are on our side.

Glad Nikki Haley was asked about whether she thinks Cox should have been allowed to have an abortion. Not surprised she refused to answer. I want every journalist who interviews her to keep asking her that question over and over again.

In other words, “Nikki” said it depended on the context. I thought Goopers took great umbrage at that sort of response.
