Hi Jessica, I think you may have published a list of abortion funds and advocacy groups a while back, but I can't find it. As Giving Tuesday approaches, could you please post it again? Thanks!
Point of information: Scott Surovell is the new Virginia Senate *majority* leader. The Senate has had a Democratic majority since 2019; Surovell is replacing Dick Saslaw.
Yeah, in the long term we need something different and better from Roe. Idk if anything could convince this court but it's also worth noting that, as bad as this has been, they only ruled on one case. I don't know that it's totally wrong to think that maybe, having seen what happens when you leave it all up to the states, that some of the justices (like Kavanaugh) might be willing to introduce at least some constraints on the state in subsequent cases. I mean I wouldn't hold my breath, and it wouldn't solve our problem, but I still hope that someday someone on the Republican side will push back against the Christian extremists. 🤷
Not sure how/if to work this into a pro-abortion strategy -- but I was very interested in what seem to have been successful arguments at SCOTUS recently on the right of persons against whom protective orders have been filed aka domestic abusers to have guns. The argument made is that this is not a 2nd Amendment 'right' issue but a public danger issue, i.e. mass shootings etc. Abortion isn't at first glance in the same category but I wonder if an argument could be made that all the restrictions placed on REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE!!! for half of our population might hurt the body public as well as the body private?
I am so happy to have Scott Surovell as my state Senator. I got a selfie with him when I met him a few years ago at an Equality VA Day of action a few years ago, about a month before pandemic lockdown. I thanked him for being the sponsor of the legislation and an X gender marker on VA licenses, and requested one the first day available (July 1, 2020). I'm so happy he thinks we can do a ballot measure in VA. Because of course we'll win it...
Thank you both for all your hard work on this newsletter.
Which Muppet? Well, my favorite is Cookie Monster, but I don't think he'd make a good elected official. For that, and especially for reproductive rights, it's Prairie Dawn, definitely Prairie Dawn. She is a badass. Do not fuck with Prairie Dawn.
Argentina is, sadly, a very very broken country. The third candidate was a woman, and she was considered the sane option, but she was eliminated in the first round.
Re: Iowa, we always come back to one of the fundamental tenets of conservatism (and patriarchy): their belief that women lie. It seems to be as old as the species. If there is anything to it, it might be that sometimes women do lie - in an effort to avoid being victims of violence, from MEN. It's a survival mechanism, that has nothing to do with one's character.
Jess I totally dig your rage at AAPLOG. Made me think of Meet the Robinsons.
“No! Everyone will tell you to let it go and move on, but don't! Instead, let it fester and boil inside of you! Take these feelings and lock them away. Let them fuel your actions. Let hate be your ally, and you will be capable of wonderful, horrid things. Heed my words, Goob: don't let it go.”

Good stuff, as always!

"If the patient takes a turn for the worse, don’t worry—AAPLOG says you don’t need an abortion, just blood transfusions in the ICU."
So what about people who, for religious reasons, can't take transfusions? Guess they just die.

“anti-abortion Bingo terms”
Have you made one of these yet?
The 'American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists'. That's like the 'Association of Flat-Earth Astronomers'.
🎯👍
Which is a chapter of 'the moon landing was faked in a Hollywood studio guild' and also affiliated with the 'moon is made of cheese 🧀 social club.

great, as ever. But I think you mean sign on Tamara Kay's door, not daughter..
Notre Dame is chock full of reactionary right wing ultra conservative catholic extremists. It’s the home base of Amy Coney Barrett. Enough said!
You mean Ofjesse? :)
I call her that, too.
G-7 . Do I get anything if I fill my bingo card 🤔 first 🤔. They should embrace Russian roulette.
I left out African-American, Indigenous People and Asian-American rights. I hope I'm communicating what I'm trying to say.
