The value that you continue to provide to the people working for rights and justice in the US cannot be overstated. Thank you so much for sticking with this newsletter and reliably providing comprehensive coverage of the post-dobbs landscape.

Good news 👏 👍

(AP) — A Kansas judge on Monday put a new state law on medication abortions on hold and blocked older restrictions that for years have spelled out what providers must tell patients and forced patients to wait 24 hours to end their pregnancies.

Ok, so much to process in today’s newsletter BUT Pence cancelled his presidential campaign and on Twitter someone responded that he should be forced to bring it to term. 💀

Regarding the Politico interview- I believe the vast majority of journalists are very unprepared for the interviews they conduct. Instead of doing their research and being ready to challenge false or distorted information given by the interviewee, they throw some questions and willing accept any answers that are given. If the interview was graded, many journalists would get an F.

I listened to the Politico interview and was infuriated by Ryan’s uncritical acceptance of Marjorie’s lies. No pushback at all.

The abortion rights side became complacent having been on the winning side for decades while anti-abortion had been working on their gaslighting techniques the whole time. It will take a while to get journalists on board. There should be requirements on training for this kind of thing.

" having been on the winning side for decades" IF you had access.

Yes. The facts on the ground really didn't support having a sense of security. Until abortion care is treated like every other form of health care we haven't won.

If anyone wants to volunteer to help in either state I've got lists of all of the ways you can volunteer (or donate) in both Virginia and Ohio. In Virginia, particularly, phonebanking/donating, texting etc. could make the difference in several close races. We lost the House of Delegates by a total of 750 votes across 3 districts in 2021! TINY margins! And some elections in VA have come down to a SINGLE VOTE! (Google Shelly Simonds tied race in 2017). Here's the VA doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nosO8_PbUdzMhgQUcxIel2-6QweU0y1Bh6ADBxtnhM0/edit and here's the Ohio doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YVlGiYA57NKBS7ZW0SsnDoZ5WwzTB2cGgBYlcgMlrqE/edit

In my conversation with the mayor of Amarillo he could not respond to the story I told of women facing horrific tragedies in the third trimester. My consensus position: let women and doctors decide in these late term situations and personhood is brain at 24 weeks.

I never understood why the heart was arbitrarily decided on the advent of personhood. It's as arbitrary as the lungs or the kidneys or the liver. The brain makes sense. That would make abortion as much murder as taking a braindead patient off life support. But then that leaves women who have nonviable fetuses that weren't diagnosed until after 24 weeks. That's a fraction of a percent of abortions so a much better consensus. But still a major issue.

It was purely a coercive emotional play. They’ve been driving around with ‘Abortion stops a beating heart’ bumper stickers for decades. If heartbeat is ‘life,’ what impact does that have on deceased donor organ transplantation?

Expand full comment

Appeal to emotion fallacies is all they have. People evidently largely see through it.

I think 🤔 the heart ❤ thing goes back at least as far as the Greeks. The heart could be felt beating 💓. It could be heard. Poets and playwrights started calling it the seat of this or that. Today we have an invented holiday called valentine's day. What we really need is a not stupid as crap day.

"Jersey Republicans up for reelection, state Sen. Ed Durr, wrote this about abortion on Facebook: “A woman does have a choice! Keep her legs closed.”"

Another demonstration this has nothing to do with "saving babies." It's about *using babies* as a justice system to enforce chastity. The cruelty is the point.

It’s also nonsense like saying they the poor should stop buying things. IF that happened our economy would implode.

I just want someone to call that nonsense out and ask them straight up if they think all women should just withhold sex unless they are actively baby seeking. And then go deep and ask them about women with complications. Children who are raped. Etc. Make them uncomfortable until they answer or walk away. Shame them not to be mean but to help others see why their ideas are garbage.

They literally do think sex should be purely for baby making. So I guess by their logic, no sex during pregnancy or breastfeeding or menopause either. If a couple only wants two kids, they should only get two months of sex their whole lives. It's so idiotic.

I wonder how many are masterbating like crazy when they are by themselves 🥸

That’s always been the real reason. Women don’t just want to have sex daily or hourly but every fifteen minutes, according to authorities in the Comstock era.

I guess they can just host conferences in Lewiston, Maine, next weekend as Students for Life Action is. Might as well get distant from these impending losses.
