The news in the NYT this morning (10/25) is that abortion has gone up in the U.S. since Dobbs. If the goal of abortion bans is to actually reduce the number of abortions, they are not working. Instead they are making it more difficult for pregnant women to get care, forcing many to travel out of state. "new bans and restrictions have had far-reaching effects. Many women, especially in the South, have turned to methods outside the U.S. medical system or carried their pregnancies to term, researchers said. These women are likely to be poor, teenagers or immigrants and to have young children or jobs that don't give them time off."

Whoops! the work you are doing

Jessica and Grace, you are a national treasure. The worst you are doing is so important.

How about a link each day to links to all the abortion funds you have vetted? The season of giving is coming up, and I know I am not alone in wanting to funnel some substantial money to the cause toward the end of the year.

Thanks.

"Morning-after abortion." Fuck them. Next they'll be calling birth control pills "pre-implantation" abortions, though they'll come up with something stickier than I could.

Does anyone know what early voting is looking like in Ohio? Is turnout high?

Yes! It would be laughable how ignorant they are of reproduction (they obviously flunked biology) and medical knowledge in general, like the idiot that tried to make a law about stuffing an ectopic pregnancy back in the uterus. We need actual medical organizations to speak up, and call out the bullshit and the damn MSM needs to cover it accurately, and stop quoting the forced-birther propaganda.

I live in Idaho, where maternal care deserts are expanding thanks to our atrocious abortion ban, one of the worst in the nation. What needs to be made clear is that this impacts health care access for everybody, not just pregnant people. It's truly scary -- and it's another reason I'm volunteering with an Ohio phone bank later today to get out the vote to protect abortion access.

Lots I could uselessly prattle on about , but instead...

Billionaire Elon Musk offered Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, $1 billion under the condition that it changes its name to “Dickipedia.”

Jessica, thank you so much for talking about what the House idiots are doing to PEPFAR. Abortion and AIDS (HIV disease) have been the two arenas of my professional life. All the news is so damn horrible, but I need to keep up w it, and you make that possible. You are a gift to all of us!

“I can’t believe that we’re talking about Republicans trying to trap women in their anti-choice states just a year out from Dobbs”

And I can’t believe that it took these religious fanatics this long. I expected them to try this within weeks of the decision. 🤯🤬

They did. The Texas Legislature didn’t want to stir things up by passing travel ban bills last season.

Texas and Florida are in a never-ending race to the bottom in terms of which state can be the bigger right wing hellhole.

Is Florida restricting travel for pregnant people? I hadn’t heard that.

Not yet, but would you bet against it happening?

Actually, yes. I would. Unlike Texas, Florida enacted a fair districts amendment to our constitution and Marc Elias and his group are fighting the DeSantis maps in the courts and winning. Floridians are fighting back. DeSantis might TRY to pass such legislation, but it won't go anywhere. For example, after the Stoneman Douglas shooting, Florida passed a red flag law with a Republican legislature. After Uvalde, Texas didn't. I think a lot of people are underestimating the mood of Floridians because of all the loudmouths. I could be wrong, but I think that enough people are totally pissed and keep in mind that we have fewer rural populations. At any event, we should be watching very carefully.

Elias is a hero, that much is certain.

And a failing governor that is term limited, and flailing in his presidential run. But, knowing my state of residence, they will just get someone worse. I thought "Prick" Scott with his ignoring our water pollution crisis (by hiring a crony to test water less) would be the worst ever.

Lubbock County did pass a ban and the City of Amarillo is considering it this week. I am meeting with an attorney on Friday about what legal action we can take, if we can raise the funds.

Everyone sane should boycott them and not stop there.

It is a fucking tragedy what is happening in our country. We need to take this shit back. I work in the trades with the men, and I can tell you, It is up to us to take our freedom back. They care as far as they want their daughters and sisters, and wives to be able to make their own decisions, but they really dislike democrats. And I fear that their distrust of the left, trumps their desire for women to be able to fully participate in the workforce.

I've said this a bunch, and I'll say it again: The only thing that will change their minds is actually being inconvenienced themselves. When they can't leave their state because they have a female in the car. Or they are stopped at the border and searched for possible pregnant women hiding in the trunk. Or they are pulled over and interrogated on airport roads. So many Americans only care about issues when they are directly and meaningfully inconvenienced.

And they are trying out these tactics bit-by-bit in places like Texas to goof-proof them for nationwide use.

Why stop there? Mandatory pregnancy checks at borders, airports, trail and bus stations. Mark Lee Dickson who’s behind all this has said as much.

They are so confident in their success they telegraph their intentions. (see Clarence "Coke Can" Thomas blurting out in his written opinion, that contraception and same sex marriage were next) this frightens me because they aren't even pretending to be lawful anymore.

They will definitely take it that far. Randomizing it first inconveniences fewer people.

We’ll be raising the specter of random checks and trying to get them on record soon.
