Great article! The only thing I would nitpick about is conservatives’ motivation behind banning non-barrier birth control. While I do think some conservatives just want their wives churning out babies, I think it’s more broadly about control over women’s sexuality. Most contraceptives in danger of being banned are contraceptives women could take on their own. Condoms, vasectomies, etc. need male consent. So conservatives aren’t necessarily against contraception—they’re against contraception that gives women agency over their sexuality. Condoms might be ok for the young lad sowing his wild oats, but a young female engaging in pre-marital sex? Or having sex with multiple partners? Not on their watch.

They are counting on people’s ignorance and embarrassment about sex. Most Americans did not and do not get comprehensive, medically accurate sex education. I think a lot of people may actually believe that pregnancy occurs during sex at the time of ejaculation. They latch onto the word “conception” like a euphemism, without really even knowing what it means, because they are embarrassed by terms like egg, sperm, and uterus. When I tried to explain the timeline to an older male relative who believes the “abortion pills in vending machines” lie, he reacted as though I’d begun narrating porn to him.
