I watch a few YouTube channels and it saddens me that the people working very hard to keep me entertained feel they have to over-explain every action to try to forestall the negative comments people so freely spout. I have long ago broken the rule about “if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all” but I do wish we could all get a “courtesy” booster shot. It would cure so many of society’s ills. Seriously my only interest in the Oscars is the costumes, my one little weakness ;).

Amen. I just turn it off and go read a book.

THANK YOU. Christ. I was just telling a friend yesterday that all this noise makes me want to log off the Internet for life and only read books.

What really grinds my gears is the proliferation of “coaches.” Especially on TikTok where videos are so hard to verify (meaning people with credentials or not). All these people who believe they are an expert but they have no formal training, education or code of ethics. They spout off bullshit for likes. I saw a TikTok recently where some “social anxiety coach” told people that body chills or shaking is trauma leaving the body. That guy got over 1 million likes for complete utter nonsense. I looked at his website and his training was having social anxiety himself. As a therapist, I’m concerned about pathologizing every single behavior or feeling people have on the internet 😑 No you don’t have ADHD your focus is poor because you haven’t had any water in 6 hours and you’re dehydrated.

The fact that I am sure you were not just being hyperbolic when you wrote that some people were actually linking the slap to the situation in Ukraine (??!?!) is just further proof that getting off twitter was one of the smarter choices I’ve made in my life, phew. That and it eliminated the growing feeling I would get that I HAD to have an opinion on everything. I have since become much more focused on staying in my lane and trying to listen more. You learn a whole lot more and honestly its much easier and freeing

It's all sound and fury, and the bard nailed it when he wrote about its significance.

Thanks for this, Jessica. So fucking true. Beyond the seeming necessity to comment, how about people waiting to see how things shake out before they offer opinions, right? Why is everyone in such a rush to share their feelings, even when they don't know the full story? Life is too short to live with all this ginned-up outrage. Anyway, a great read.

I admit I had some fun reading the more unhinged takes but the whole thing was too much of a 'meh' to me to get really into it.

Mind you, I had a 'You're fucking kidding me' moment when the Academy stated that they would never condone violence of any kind - which is a bit like the porn industry saying it condemns sex outside the marriage.
