That has totally gotta be ultra religious people trying to shut down contraception. See now we were all great with the health dept.. handing out birth control and condoms until someone had to go and write legislation that stepped on the beliefs of certain denominations by forcing ultra religious pharmacy owners to carry plan b. I feel like the same thing happened with abortions. Forever it remained the same with the three month cut off and no one could touch it. Then someone started pushing for full term healthy baby abortions that covered all the way up to delivery. There has to be some sort of limitation on this subject. And I feel like it should go back to the way it was before both sides started going to extremes. But back to the miscarriages being abuse of a corpse.... what the hell is someone supposed to do? Take it out of the toilet and call an ambulance? Not totally sure about that.....
I'm thinking back to when seniors overwhelmed Congress in 1989 by mailing used tea bags as a protest. Women need to start sending in used menstrual pads and tampons to their state legislatures and Congress. Let these lawmakers examine them for signs of "corpses."
"These are all the predictable consequences of treating embryos and fetuses like people." This with a slight amendment. These are all the predictable consequences of treating embryos and fetuses like people with more value than living breathing women.
I emailed ABOG and asked them to consider the implications of having OB/GYNs sit for a certification exam in a hostile abortion ban state. It is a safety concern. It probably won't get read or even responded to but it still made me feel like I was doing something.
Thank you for all your reporting Jessica. I live in Texas. Hope to leave soon. We are retired. I can’t wait to relocate. It’s Toxic here. Grateful we can do this. Others cannot. 😢
How many of you believe in KARMA? I do. And I would like karma to visit Hamhock Hamrick with a rape and pregnancy. And we could all watch to see what she does.
The story that distresses me the most (and yes this is hard to read every day) is actually the ABOG story. And this is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about when I commented the other day that the only 'powers that be' are money and they don't give a shit.
States have made OBGYNs' job illegal. They have indicted at least one provider. And yet ABOG makes them travel to _Texas_ to keep their jobs. Why? Because they spent millions of dollars on a fucking building.
How can we possibly expect to make ANY progress fighting back when someone like ABOG, who should be representing the work OBGYNs do, instead threatens them, or at least throws them under the bus, for money? With friends like that who needs enemies?
I almost wish Texas _would_ arrest someone who came to the state to take the test, just to put ABOG on the spot. None of this is remotely safe or normal, and as long as people keep pretending it is, it's only going to get worse.
Agreed, it’s really distressing. I’d like to understand how Texas became the hub for women’s healthcare? Their track record is fantastic. Maybe some oil money and influence going on?
I’m going to put this here. Good read on the history of how we got here.
“But the abortion myth quickly collapses under historical scrutiny. In fact, it wasn’t until 1979—a full six years after Roe—that evangelical leaders, at the behest of conservative activist Paul Weyrich, seized on abortion not for moral reasons, but as a rallying-cry to deny President Jimmy Carter a second term. Why? Because the anti-abortion crusade was more palatable than the religious right’s real motive: protecting segregated schools. So much for the new abolitionism.”
There needs to be class actions lawsuits against all these states. The only way to stop these psychotic fascist imbeciles is to bankrupt them into oblivion
I just tried to click the Jezebel link and got "sorry, you've been blocked." Weird. So extra thanks for sharing this story with us tomorrow. And good god, five months in jail when they had no case. How is this happening? (Was the woman Black??)
So they have a certain amount of time they can hold you before they file charges. Betting just to be a bastard the DA held her the legally allowed amount then didn’t move forward with charges. I’m wondering why tf her bail was so high. 100k is murder charge high!
I looked Mallori Strait up and found that she is a woman of color who was also homeless and had not had prenatal care-and Texas' response was to treat her as a criminal.
bbb, I hate gd Texas. The Republicans there are a bunch of misogynistic bastards, most of them white males. I have a sister who lives there and I don't speak to her anymore. And when I die, I'm leaving PP all my money.
We have more power at least in DC than we are using. Any one Senator can hold up any business indefinitely. Sure the gop could change the rules but we should force their hand. I'm in California, I write both my Senators about this once or twice a month. Also Schumer every now and again. We need fighters, not comity weenies.
I was in Washington DC, today, near Planned Parenthood. I was moved to see people standing by to provide safe passage to its entrance. Ordinary people doing extraordinary work.

I feel the same way. There are days that I get so enraged about what is going on the I cannot read the newsletter.

If they want to charge someone with “abuse of a corpse” how about starting with the people who are abusing Adriana Smjth’s body?
I second that!

Of course. Cruelty and hatred towards the most vulnerable is the way in the USA.
I hope she can sue sue sue the pants off of the state.
