I did not know that about the “San Marzano” tomatoes that aren’t! Dammit, I always bought that brand and they were never that great but, you know, it felt like I had to because you always hear they’re the best kind.

But I was happy to find the Bianca tomatoes here in Portland after moving back after a few years living in Phoenix, where the Bianca pizza experience eluded me for years due to the popularity of his restaurant with impossible wait times. They have cute packaging and I especially like buying them now because they’ve had a really hard time during the pandemic, which is kind of obvious since nearly all restaurants are.

Chris Bianco opened a little sandwich shop that offered pizza nonchalantly and it was wonderful because no one seemed to go there, and I have few happy memories of living in Phoenix but sitting outside that shop and eating a pizza is on the list — it was a big deal for me, as I was working with a nutritionist at the time to get over some disordered eating patterns that made pizza verboten. It started changing my rigidity around what I could eat and what I thought what I ate meant about me. (Whew is Phoenix ever an image-obsessed, insular place to exist and eat food as a fat queer lady.)

I love the fact that your pantry looks just like mine (stacked to the gills with everything shoved in there this way and that). This tells me that you're a true #foodie. ;-) We have everything we need, and only we know exactly where it is. Also, I had read the Mara Wilson piece earlier in the week, it was so good. It's an excellent glimpse into reality in our celebrity obssessed culture.

Thank you, Jessica! I learned something new today! I keep a pretty extensive bar, but had never heard of a Shrub. I looked it up, it sounds delightful, and I will have to add it to our weekend cocktail experiments.

Hear you on the San Marzano! The tomato paste from Amore is the best and I’ve tried most available in the USA. (Whole Foods one is the worst!) Fresh pasta is excellent but rarely do I feel like adding hours to my meal prep.

Everything in this newsletter is speaking to me, thus: subscribed. (Also, if folks haven't read Cottom's excellent collection of essays, Thick, it's pretty much required reading. https://tressiemc.com/writing/)

Thank you for the kind mention! And yes, the Tavi Gevinson piece was so good: I’ve been quoting her to friends daily since reading it. And hey, I’m loving that prickly cushion thing you raved about a few newsletters ago. I love it on the back of my neck, particularly. In related, I’m pretty sure I signed up for the paid newsletter, and if I am mistaken, I will be, soon! Worth every penny.
