Congratulations, Jessica, on this shout out in the NYT today:

"Jessica Valenti, a feminist author, addressed the speech in her 'Abortion, Every Day' newsletter, saying 'So let’s be very clear about this commencement speech: Butker’s remarks weren’t ‘fringe’ or radical — they’re the law. He was simply saying out loud what Republicans have already codified: that women’s role in this country is to bear children and support men, who are the actual stars of the show.' She said bans on abortion, like the ones Mr. Butker is advocating, are 'the embodiment of the smallest men’s biggest wishes.' "

"Smallest men's biggest wishes;" a well turned phrase that will live on forever! So many women standing and cheering!

Calling out the last section of Jessica’s always-excellent newsletter. Republicans won’t merely do away with no-fault divorce. If they attain full power, they will abolish ALL divorce. They believe their Bibles says God means marriage to be for eternity. To them, it is a holy covenant.

A portion of Republicans are openly saying right now that voting should be by “household,” not by individual. This is an effort to roll back the female right to vote.

If you’ve followed Harrison Butker’s commencement speech, the subtext for this issue would be “I’m the man, the head of the home. I will tell my wife how to vote, and she will joyfully obey me if she wants to please God. And if voting becomes by household, I will vote for my household, and she will have no say in the choices I make. Because I’m the man, the head of the home, the God-ordained leader in this marriage. What I say goes.”

I cannot stress enough how revealing his comments are for the entire Christo-fascist eco-system. A lot of people have written about his misogyny, but this is more than misogyny. It’s forcing women to live like Handmaids for the Christian Taliban.
